Description
The Office of the Attorney General is the chief law office for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, responsible for defending laws and protecting Kentuckians. The Office of Rate Intervention (ORI) advocates for consumers in matters related to utilities such as electric, natural gas, water and sewer as well as overall energy matters and policy. The ORI is seeking to hire a highly motivated attorney interested in public service and upholding the rule of law to join our team of legal professionals.

The selected candidate will be responsible for assisting attorneys with cases, managing their own case load, and must be willing to litigate administrative cases primarily before the Public Service Commission as well as appeals and litigation in state courts. This person must be comfortable working with other attorneys, government agencies, expert witnesses and constituents. Duties are performed primarily in both office and administrative courtroom settings.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Researching case law
  • Drafting legal documents
  • Engaging in litigation on a variety of levels
  • Developing a theory of case that is consistent with the facts and the law
  • Responding to requests related to legal matters
  • Performing related duties as assigned

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky OR comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 2.111 (limited certification of admission to practice), SCR 2.112 (attorney participants in defender or legal services programs), SCR 2.116 (supervised practice), or SCR 2.117 (practice pending admission). Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Duties are performed primarily in both office and courtroom settings. Travel is required.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
