Please note that this position is expected to be part of the pending sale of the Allianz Commercial (MidCorp/Entertainment) business to Arch Insurance (Arch). By the end of May (or shortly after hiring for those hired by Allianz in the latter part of May or thereafter), Arch is expected to make comparable offers of employment to the employees of the MidCorp/Entertainment business, conditioned upon, and subject to, the closing of the transaction. The transaction is expected to close following, and subject to, the satisfaction of all applicable closing conditions, including regulatory approval of the transaction. If an employee receives and accepts Arch’s offer of employment, subject to the employee’s satisfaction of the conditions to Arch’s offer, the employee will commence employment with Arch at, and subject to, the close of the transaction. At that time, the employee will be covered by Arch’s benefit plans and policies.

Our team is committed to growing the Middle Market Umbrella & Excess Northeast Region book with a focus on High Excess with a combination of Lead Umbrella. You will part of a collaborative team of Underwriters, Legal, Risk Consultant, Claims and Operations staff working together to ensure that Middle Market Umbrella & Excess meets its objectives and continues to be recognized as a world-class team.
The Impact You Will Have
Reporting to the Regional Head of Middle Market Umbrella & Excess, USA, you will join the team as a Regional Middle Market Umbrella & Excess Senior Leader. You will be responsible for developing and executing the LoB local strategy and proactively support the development of the LoB strategy, managing the local LoB portfolio to ensure the Allianz Commercial LoB targets are met successfully, building a functional team and delegating underwriting authority within the USA zone.
Some of your specific responsibilities could include:
- Effectively manage and lead the Northeast Zone team to drive production and profitability for Middle Market Umbrella & Excess.
- Has accountability for the risk selection, pricing, retention, growth and profitability (per divisional objectives) decisions made by members of the underwriting team.
- Has accountability for the performance, development and coaching of staff (hiring, firing, performance management, pay increases, etc.). Ensures the department has a sufficient number of trained staff to provide necessary levels of service and achieve department performance results.
- Serves as a technical expert in and ensures staff is able to interpret and explain products, facilities, practices and services.
- Work closely with all internal stakeholders including CUO, Distribution, Claims, Finance and Actuarial to drive continuous improvements in the portfolio ensuring the business is performing as expected as well as taking appropriate remediation action if required.
- Accountable for the development of marketing plans for assigned territory, taking into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of the agents and competitors, divisional objectives and overall market conditions. This includes developing and maintaining client relationships as well as brokers relationships for both Retail and Wholesale Brokers.
- Work with other divisions and lines of businesses to drive production and cross-sell efforts.
What You’ll Bring to the Role
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in Excess/Umbrella underwriting;
- Significant experience in leading and directing a team of underwriters, including the ability to delegate tasks, steer team direction/goals, within a complex global matrix environment;
- Ability to build and foster relationships internally across the organization and externally with our broker partners;
- Outstanding technical skills with ability to analyze complex data/information from multiple sources;
- Ability to express ideas and messages clearly, both written and verbally;
- Strong thought leadership skills with the ability to persuade and motivate others to act; and
- Strong solution orientation, with an entrepreneurial spirit.
