Individual Placement- 2026 White River General Ranger Assistant

Position Summary 

Applications needed for a field ranger assistant to fill position at two heavily used day use areas in Mt. Rainier National Park, Tipsoo and Sunrise. Each area needs an assistant ranger presence to assure that fragile alpine resources are protected and that the public is provided education about the sensitivity of these alpine areas. This position will be responsible for managing large parking facilities, trail patrol, providing visitor resource education and providing current trail conditions. The field ranger assistant may conduct joint patrols into the wilderness to camp and assist rangers with checking permits for the thousands of campers on the trail. The field ranger assistant will assist the rangers in education of the visitors on the Wilderness Act, Leave No Trace principles and NPS regulations. EMT training background and/or WFR certification desired.

May 18, 2026 - September 11, 2026

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Marginal Duties 

Mount Rainier National Park is a dynamic work environment, and SCA members may be asked to assume reasonable duties and responsibilities in addition to those listed above.

 

Some marginal duties may include helping with campsite maintenance or cleanup or occasional data entry or paperwork support.

 

Required Qualifications 

• Valid driver’s license Personal vehicle highly recommended to provide greater access to additional recreational opportunities in the Puget Sound area.
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
• Willingness and ability to work well independently and as a team.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs. (day pack/bags of equipment)
• Ability to assist and engage with the public.
• An understanding of Leave No Trace principles and the Wilderness Act
• A positive attitude

 

Hours 

40 per week

 

Living Accommodations 

Onsite shared housing will be provided. White River and Sunrise areas have shared living apartments that are available. Housing is directly adjacent to alpine hiking trails and walking distance to workstations.

 

Compensation  

• $650- one time RT travel allowance
• $500 - weekly living allowance
• Eligible for the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority upon successful completion of position (& 640 hrs. minimum of service)
• Access to hiking in one of the best alpine locations in the PNW
• 24/7 Incident Response by SCA
• All Weather Uniform Package
