The Opportunity
Ulteig is currently seeking qualified candidates for a Technical Manager position in the Renewables - Substation department. This role focuses on leading a substation engineering team comprised of professionals with civil and electrical engineering and technician backgrounds. The Technical Manager will play a key role in supporting renewables substation projects, advancing business development initiatives, and contributing to company-wide strategies and objectives.
What You'll Do
As Technical Manager, you will:
- Interact closely with other corporate business units such as sales, marketing, account management, and project management.
- Serve as a self-starting technical leader with expertise in leadership, communication, resource management, business acumen, industry framework, and consulting engineering.
Project Technical Lead - 60%
- Manage and lead all engineering activities during proposal, design, and construction stages of assigned substation projects.
- Provide project oversight, including managing engineering scope per technical contracts, developing change orders, and maintaining project schedules.
- Direct and coordinate activities across multiple disciplines and the Project Management group for projects of significant scope.
- Maintain high levels of quality and responsiveness to meet client requirements in alignment with company expectations.
- Oversee substation design activities of team members.
- Review project drawings, calculations, and specifications, assuming responsible charge as needed.
Management Responsibilities – 30%
- Maintain and grow a positive team culture.
- Provide strategic direction, leadership, and technical oversight to help employees achieve individual, team, department, and organizational goals.
- Create and manage team budgets, including revenue, profitability, and indirect expenses.
- Coach, train, and develop engineering technical staff for growth and development opportunities, including regular 1:1 meetings, career development discussions, succession planning, quarterly reviews, promotions, team retention, and engagement surveys.
- Actively manage team resource planning, cross-team and cross-office resourcing, performance reviews, annual merit and bonus decisions, and professional development.
- Support hiring manager responsibilities and company-wide hiring, including candidate evaluation, technical phone screens, collaboration with HR, and interview debriefs.
Business Development Responsibilities – 10%
- Partner with Sales and engineering teams to promote revenue growth and expand services with clients.
- Support proposal efforts by developing, providing resources, and reviewing proposals with the Proposal Development Team and Project Management group.
- Maintain and build positive client relationships.
- Participate in cross-functional teams on strategic company and department initiatives.
What We Expect from You
- A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university or an equivalent institution is required.
- Candidates must have a minimum of 12 years of engineering experience, with a preference for those who possess direct substation experience.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is required.
- Strong analytical skills, motivation, and the ability to work effectively under high-pressure situations while maintaining a positive, enthusiastic, and collaborative attitude
- Demonstrated passion for internal engagement and a commitment to maximizing the development of others.
- Solid business acumen and in-depth industry knowledge.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, enabling effective relationships with staff, management, the public, and external agencies.
- High level of initiative and proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, setting clear expectations and responding promptly to needs.
- Outstanding presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Willingness to seek out and explore new opportunities, balanced with an understanding of organizational risk.
- Proven experience with Microsoft Software Applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, as well as additional specialty software as required.
- Authorization to work permanently in the United States.
