The Pharmaceutical Candidate Optimization organization at Bristol Myers Squibb is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary department that works to discover and optimize new drug candidates. We work across all therapeutic areas and all modalities (small molecules, biotherapeutics, gene and cell therapies and other novel modalities), and engage with all other R&D functions to advance new assets in the BMS portfolio. In Pharmaceutical Candidate Optimization (PCO), Discovery Pharmaceutics & Analytical Sciences (DPAS), you will have the ability to impact the lives of patients by working with multidisciplinary research teams to help discover novel, efficacious and safe therapeutic molecules. BMS is looking for a research scientist to join our diverse analytical department in Drug Discovery to contribute to the primary structure characterization of different therapeutic modalities. This role is well-suited for a scientist possessing a strong background in protein mass spectrometry and data analysis to leverage novel technologies and methodologies for protein characterization of biotherapeutics, including monoclonal antibodies, bi/milti-specifics, ADC, Fc-fusion proteins, etc. This role will have responsibilities for defining and executing analytical strategies to expand existing capabilities and define the optimal analytical approaches necessary to support drug discovery programs.
Job Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for the following:
- Perform analytical studies on biotherapeutics to access chemical stability, glycosylation profile, fragmentation and aggregation during developability and platform formulation fit assessment utilizing chromatography and mass spectrometry in a fast-paced Discovery environment
- Execute peptide mass mapping, subunit, intact mass, glycosylation and post-translational modification analysis of proteins to support liability assessment of therapeutic modalities
- Operation and day to day maintenance of varies high end mass spectrometers Q-TOF (Waters), Orbitrap Exploris, Orbitrap Lumos (Thermo)
- Work in a team environment to evaluate and implement novel mass spec based techniques
- Represent the department on project teams and present data at internal department and / or other company meetings as well as external conferences.
- Maintain good laboratory practices and documentation (ELN)
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree with 4+ years of academic / industry experience
- or
- Master's Degree with 2+ years of academic / industry experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree with 4+ years of academic / industry experience, with emphasis on protein characterization by mass spectrometry
- Experience with intact/subunit analysis, peptide mapping, glycosylation and PTM analysis of proteins using mass spectrometry
- Experience in protein and peptide chromatography and application of various modes of UPLC/HPLC (e.g, reversed-phase (RP), Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC), Ion-Exchange (IEX), Hydrophobic interaction (HIC)
