POSITION SUMMARY:

The Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (CIA) Director is a key instructional leader responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of UVA's academic programs. This role provides strategic leadership across curriculum design, literacy and numeracy initiatives, K–12 assessments, data analysis, and professional development to ensure high-quality learning experiences for all students.

Working closely with the Superintendent and Deputy Academic Officer, the CIA Director collaborates with school leaders and instructional staff to strengthen teaching practices and improve student outcomes. This position also serves as the primary liaison with the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) and leads district-wide professional learning and instructional support efforts.

The CIA Director uses student achievement data to guide instructional decisions, identify areas of need, and implement targeted support for staff and school leaders. This role ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and UVA policies while fostering a culture of academic excellence and student-centered learning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 


Supports the Superintendent and Deputy Academic Officer in leading academic programs, departmental priorities, and organizational goals through effective communication, implementation, and alignment of the district’s academic strategy
 
Leads the selection, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of high-quality digital instructional materials and resources aligned to state standards, curriculum goals, and the needs of a K–12 online learning environment
 
Serves as the primary liaison and implementation lead for the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET), supporting school improvement through professional development, coaching, evaluation frameworks, instructional rubrics, collaborative learning practices, data monitoring, and continuous improvement processes
 


 


Oversees the design, implementation, and monitoring of comprehensive literacy and numeracy initiatives that strengthen instructional practices, improve student achievement, and establish clear learning expectations across all grade levels
 
Monitors state policy updates, mandates, and compliance requirements related to curriculum and instruction while overseeing the implementation of high-quality reading and mathematics curricula and instructional programs
 
Oversees the development, administration, and analysis of K–12 assessment systems — including benchmark, formative, summative, and state assessments — to ensure effective progress monitoring and data-informed instructional decision-making
 
Analyzes district, school, classroom, and student performance data to identify trends, determine instructional needs, and develop targeted recommendations for support, intervention, and continuous academic improvement
 
Plans, facilitates, and evaluates high-quality professional development for instructional staff, leaders, and administrators focused on curriculum implementation, instructional best practices, assessment literacy, leadership development, and student engagement in virtual learning environments
 
Leads strategic planning and delivery of district-wide professional development for End-of-Year and Beginning-of-Year cycles, coordinating with school leadership, system-level directors, and internal and external stakeholders to address priority needs
 
Collaborates with school leaders and academic teams to provide ongoing instructional support, strengthen educator effectiveness, and ensure fidelity of curriculum implementation
 
Directs the ongoing alignment and review of curricula to state standards, including coordinating vendor partnerships, scheduling professional development, monitoring implementation progress, and tracking purchases and program needs
 
Collaborates with the federal programs team and other departments to identify funding opportunities, align program initiatives with grant requirements, and ensure academic expenditures remain within approved budget parameters
 
Participates in the planning, development, implementation, and administration of policies, rules, and regulations
 



Protects the confidenti
