About the role

About our group:

 

The Reliability Characterization and Analytics Group is responsible for the reliability analysis and failure characterization of the magnetic writer, near-field plasmonic antenna, optical waveguide, and semiconductor lasers to support Seagate’s industry-leading new Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) drive technology. We are looking for a materials engineer to join our team to assist Seagate in making the exciting transition to this new recording head technology.

About the role - you will:

 

  • Evaluate reliability tests that effectively predict the performance of new recording head technologies in customer applications
  • Analyse reliability data to make reliability projections of new designs/processes and identify potential failure modes
  • Coordinate special FA characterization to understand the underlying material and physical processes leading to device failure
  • Work on DOEs (Design of Experiments) to validate hypotheses of root cause mechanisms
  • Collaborate with design and process teams to develop new materials, designs and/or processes that mitigate degradation mechanisms that result in improved reliability

Your experience includes:

 

  • Knowledgeable in material/surface science and degradation/failure mechanisms of nanoscale electronic / electromechanical / semiconductor/ semiconductor laser / plasmonic devices. 
  • Knowledgeable in failure analysis techniques, including SEM, TEM, EELs, EDX, etc.
  • Proficient in engineering data statistics (inferential statistics, DOE design and analysis, regression, time-based series, etc.) is a plus
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering related field (i.,e Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Computer Engineering, Materials, Physics, or Information Technology) and 5+ years of experience or Master’s Degree in the same and 3+ years’ experience  or PhD and 0+ years’ experience or equivalent experience and education.

Our Normandale campus spans two suburbs, Edina and Bloomington, and serves as the Recording Head development and manufacturing arm of Seagate.
