The Design & Construction team within NYCEDC’s Asset Management Division plays a vital role in the development of the city's economic landscape. Responsible for capital programming of the largest and most diverse real estate portfolio in NYC (spanning all five boroughs), the department oversees the capital planning, design, and construction of various assets, including retail spaces, commercial buildings, industrial sites, ports, public markets, theaters, and affordable campuses. With a $1Bn capital program across more than 100 projects funded by City Capital and NYCEDC’s operating budget, the department is at the forefront of shaping New York City’s infrastructure.
Position Overview: The Senior Vice President (SVP) of Design & Construction reports directly to the Senior Vice President of Development. This executive role is pivotal in leading the department’s efforts across key areas such as campuses, industrial sites, retail and wholesale centers, public markets, and waterfront transportation. The SVP will lead a department that oversees project administration, permitting, project control, design management, and project delivery, driving strategic vision and strong leadership to align with NYCEDC’s mission.
This role requires strategic vision, strong leadership, experience working with and in large organizations, operational competencies and effective collaboration to ensure the successful execution of projects and alignment with NYCEDC's mission-set.
Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Strategic Planning: Direct the department's strategy and capability development and aligning project execution with organizational goals and citywide economic initiatives.
- Operational Performance: Build and improve on departmental goal and performance standards and metrics as well as on critical organizational tie-ins and inter-agency linkages and processes. This will include developing and evolving new and existing SOP’s, standards of practice, and knowledge management assets.
- Project Management Excellence: Ensure all projects adhere to the highest standards, with effective management of timelines, budgets, and specifications. Oversee the master project schedule, incorporating leasing, design cycles, and procurement to maintain alignment with project objectives.
- Organizational Collaboration: Work closely with other senior leaders to develop and synchronize division-wide initiatives and optimizing resource allocation across departments.
- Stakeholder Relations: Establish procedures for seamless coordination between the Design & Construction department and other NYCEDC divisions. Act as a primary contact for external stakeholders, including government officials and business leaders, ensuring projects align with broader city objectives.
- Operational Oversight: Direct the design and construction processes, establishing milestone dates and budget checks. Monitor project performance metrics, including schedule adherence and MWBE participation.
- Team Leadership and Development: Provide mentorship, foster a culture of professional development, and maintain high team engagement and satisfaction. Offer ongoing coaching and feedback to enhance team performance.
- Other Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee procurement for processes for design consultants, contractors & their subcontractors; manage internal team members that oversee vendor management to ensure efficient project execution.
- Draft, maintain, and update the master project schedule, integrating factors such as Leasing, Design Cycle, Budget Review, Procurement, Construction, Permit Application, Closeout, and Commissioning. Ensure alignment with project objectives and critical path analysis.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Management, Engineering, Architecture, or Construction.
- 15+ years in architecture, construction, real estate development, or related fields, with significant leadership experience in managing large-scale, complex projects, or within significant organizational divisions.
