The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is seeking applicants with strong database experience and effective communication skills to fill a Marine Resource Scientist I position in the Biological Monitoring & Assessment Division/ Bureau of Marine Science located at the West Boothbay Harbor laboratory.
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position will be responsible for monitoring dealer and harvester licenses, contacting harvesters and dealers with new reporting requirements, training dealers and harvesters with mandatory reporting requirements, rejecting and correcting incomplete reports, assisting with report writing, assisting with landings data analysis, and completing data audits. This position will also be responsible for outreach with licensed dealers, will train dealers to report electronically and will help enforce mandatory reporting requirements. This position will help monitor the elver and sea urchin swipe card program and in-season quota checks. The position will assist with training harvesters or dealers wishing to use the new Maine LEEDS (Licensing Enforcement and Environmental Data System) and VESL reporting applications to submit their mandatory reports.
Travel throughout the Maine coastal area is required. Additionally, this position may work collaboratively with other programs in the Bureau of Marine Science to aid other projects as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Entry level education, training, or experience in a scientific, technical, or engineering discipline with demonstrated experience in the field of marine resource research and management or another related field.
Preference will be given to those applicants with extensive experience in database design, maintenance and advanced querying techniques (Access, R, SQL preferred but not limited) and spatial analysis. Additional qualities must include strong interpersonal and communication skills, a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at the same time, and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
