The Medication Safety Officer has primary oversight of the system-wide medication safety program. Proactively develops and facilitates implementation of error-prevention strategies based on practice standards, national safety recommendations, and analysis of the organization's medication safety data. Ensures compliance with best practices identified by national organizations as it pertains to medication safety. Serve as an authoritative resource on medication safety for the organization and leads antimicrobial stewardship efforts. A Brief Overview

Serve as an authoritative resource on medication safety for the organization and leads antimicrobial stewardship efforts. What you will do

• Develops, directs, and administers a medication safety program for the healthcare system that minimizes medication errors and resulting harm.
• Facilitates development and maintenance of policies, procedures and action plans aimed to promote medication safety, ensure standardized practices across the system, and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.
• Monitors, analyzes, and improves the system’s controls for medication handling, storing, and dispensing.
• Collects and evaluates data to identify, measure, and track and trend incidents; develops effective mechanisms to respond to trends and high-risk areas in a proactive and collaborative manner.
• Provides leadership in medication safety through collaboration and participation in various multidisciplinary committees; maintains knowledge in the field of specialty to ensure a high level of technical competency and promote best practices system-wide.
• Serves as an expert resource and liaison to Information Systems to provide information, problem solving, content, and workflow for clinical pharmacy technology applications. Assists with clinical development and maintenance of content build.
• Works to establish and promote a blame-free environment focused on patient safety using the Just Culture principles as it relates to medication safety.
• Oversees the hospital clinical surveillance system as it pertains to safe medication practices including antimicrobial usage.
• Serves as a preceptor for pharmacy residents and students.

Education/Formal Training Requirements

• Master's Degree Healthcare Administration
• Master's Degree Business Administration/Management
• Doctorate Pharmacy

Work Experience Requirements

• Drug information and medication safety
• 5-7 years Pharmacy (clinical, hospital, outpatient, or specialty)
• Pharmacy Leadership

Licenses and Certifications Requirements

• Pharmacist Mississippi - Mississippi Board of Pharmacy
• Pharmacist Tennessee - Tennessee Board of Pharmacy

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrates a clear understanding of regulatory and reporting requirements related to procurement and dispensing of drugs.
• Knowledge of general principles of medication use safety, theory, medication error reporting systems, performance improvement and risk management.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively organize, lead, and motivate individuals and teams.
• Proficient computer skills for developing analysis tools and reports.

Supervision Provided by this Position

• Manages the Pharmacy Drug Use Policy coordinator and other staff assigned to this area.
