In this position…

Working within a unionized environment, the Plant HR Director leads all HR functions within a specific manufacturing plant or plants, ensuring they are aligned with strategic business objectives and company values. This key role involves close collaboration with Plant Leadership and central HR teams to elevate the manufacturing employee experience by delivering impactful HR products and services throughout both the hourly and salaried employee life cycles. The Plant HR Director strategically implements HR programs and talent initiatives to drive business success, overseeing staffing, performance management, employee relations, local union contract negotiations, and ensuring compliance with labor laws and regulations. Reporting to the Regional HR Sr. Director, this role has management authority for staffing, performance, discipline, pay decisions, team development, and other personnel actions within the plant, and forms a part of a broader team that includes Manufacturing Plant HR, Manufacturing HR Business Operations, Corporate Labor, and Greenfield HR.    

What you'll do…

  • Collaborates closely with Plant Leadership and union representatives to ensure correct implementation and accurate interpretation of the contract terms, addressing inquiries, grievances, and other union-related issues for consistent application. Oversees the resolution of employee union issues, such as conflicts, disputes, and disciplinary matters, ensuring fairness, consistency, and timeliness.  
  • Leads the development of local collective bargaining agreements and associated negotiations with employee unions.
  • Implements annual Manufacturing People metrics within the plant, proactively monitoring and collaborating with the Regional HR Sr. Director and Plant Leadership to identify and address gaps.
  • Oversees and conducts investigations within the plant, ensuring that all disciplinary issues, grievances, and arbitration matters are handled in a timely and effective manner. Assesses the severity of each case and escalates significant concerns to Employee Relations or the Regional HR Sr. Director as required. 
  • Executes Corporate Labor and salaried COE designed products and services within the plant that impact both the hourly and salaried employee life cycles.
  • Fosters a positive and inclusive hourly and salary employee experience through proactive initiatives based on feedback through employee opinion surveys, suggestions, and open-door policies to boost engagement and address areas for improvement.
  • Leads strategic initiatives to address complex employee relations challenges by conducting thorough stakeholder management, risk analysis, and the evaluation of innovative solutions. 
  • Leverages lean methodology in collaboration with internal departments, external vendors, auditors, and consultants to make decisions, problem solve and drive effective change management programs.
  • Works closely with safety and occupational health leads to address employee health and wellness concerns, conduct safety audits, implement wellness programs, and continuously improve safety performance for a healthy and safe work environment.
  • Develops a deep understanding of plant operations to make informed decisions, provide valuable consulting to plant leadership, and offer strategic guidance on HR matters aligned with business objectives.
  • Builds strong relationships with key stakeholders, including the Plant Manager, Assistant Plant Manager, Operating Committee, and others, to identify solutions that drive sustainable cultural change and support the achievement of business objectives.
  • Takes ownership of People Leader activities for the Plant HR team, including creating development plans, providing recognition, coaching and mentoring, and managing performance documentation and evaluations to support organizational goals.
  • Owns accountability for talent management responsibilities within the plant, including performance management, disciplinary action, terminations, recruitment, pay decisions, and other personnel actions.
  • Ensures compliance with employment laws, regulations, and company policies. 
  • Oversees interactions with local governmental agencies and coordinates charitable activities to support the plant's community engagement efforts.
