About the role

The Security Engineering team is a trusted partner throughout the organization. We work hard to make Betterment the most secure place for our customers’ money. We do this by building tools for our development teams, improving the security and integrity of our systems and adding monitoring and visibility into our services. This helps us move faster and smarter, all while done within a highly regulated and secure environment.

We leverage a number of technologies to power our tools and platform, including AWS, Kubernetes (EKS), Helm, Terraform, Datadog, CircleCI, and Splunk. We write, review, and advise in Ruby, Javascript, Java, and Python just to name a few of our popular languages. As an engineer on the Security Engineering team, you'll help deliver new products, tools, and systems in a secure manner that make engineering more impactful and help keep our customers safe and happy! 

You use this experience to guide your decision making, ranging from communication style to software architecture. You are a highly motivated engineer who will work on tasks such as delivering new tools and systems that make engineering more impactful or working with your peers to help improve the security and reliability of our systems. You will work with our Security Operations Center (SOC) to monitor, triage, and remedy security events while also improving detection logic. You are always keeping up with what is going on within the tech industry and strive to learn and share your knowledge with colleagues. You are interested in collecting data and metrics and know how to use them to effectively drive change.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees. 

  • New York City: $175,000 - $205,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.  For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly.

 

A day in the life

  • Lead and collaborate on cloud security initiatives strengthening our engineering practices
  • Align security capabilities of cloud infrastructure and services with evolving threats by enhancing vulnerability detection and patching processes.
  • Write and review infrastructure code to resolve security concerns alongside SRE, IT, platform and data engineers.
  • Conduct threat modeling exercises, architecture reviews, and offensive security engagements with product teams
  • Innovate with modern cloud technologies to secure systems such as CI/CD, sensitive data storage, business continuity/ disaster recovery, and client data retrieval, and more
  • Provide mentorship and education for security and software engineering excellence

 

What we’re looking for

  • 5+ years of experience designing, building, and revising secure AWS cloud environments with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) such as Terraform.
  • Deep experience and understanding of securing modern cloud environments (AWS resource specific security issues, Security Hub recommendations, secure cross-account access patterns, secure IAM patterns)
  • Experience with exploiting common cloud security vulnerabilities and fixing them.
  • Experience working in a product setting where the needs of the business and users must be weighed against security requirements
  • Experience doing secure code reviews (e.g. identifying OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities)
  • Experience providing security guidance on protocols like DNS, HTTP, TLS, etc
  • Experience with the Linux command line interface
  • Experience with any of these technologies is a plus: CircleCI, Kubernetes, Postgres, GraphQL, Ruby on Rails, Flutter, React
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate complex and varying stake
