Summary

Performs intermediate skilled administrative support work registering voters, assisting with clerical duties and support in the Elections Office, greeting and assisting visitors and callers, preparing and maintaining voter records and files, preparing precinct supply boxes and assisting with voting terminal testing, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Director of Elections. Assist with other duties as needed or assigned.

Examples of duties

Chief Judge
  • Manage polling place operations on Election Day.
  • Plan and organize the polling place set-up on Monday before Election Day.
  • Pick up and return election supplies.
  • Sign all official documents.
Judge
  • Work under the direction of the Chief Judge.
  • Assist at the polling place set-up on Monday before Election Day.
  • Work at Help Table if assigned.
  • Sign all official documents.
  • Assist with polling place break-down after polls close on Election Day.
Assistant
  • Work under the direction of the Chief Judge.
  • Assist at the polling place set-up on Monday before Election Day.
  • Work at the Help Table if assigned.
  • Assist with polling place break-down after polls close on Election Day.

Qualifications

General knowledge of standard office procedures, practices and equipment; general knowledge of federal, state and municipal voter registration laws and regulations; general knowledge of voting procedures, maintenance and protection of voting registration lists and records; general knowledge of and ability to operate personal computers, associated hardware, software and peripheral equipment; ability to type accurately at a reasonable rate of speed; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

All the above responsibilities, depending on the position assigned, can be trained to work as a Chief Judge, Judge, or Assistant. Mandatory Election Training Session prior to election.
 
Applicants must be a registered voter who resides in the precinct where they wish to serve. To serve as an election worker on Election Day, you must be a registered voter or be a high school student who is at least 17 years old and in good academic standing (this does not apply to early voting).
Precinct officials may not be a candidate or relative of a candidate in the election. They also may not be an elected government official, hold office with a political party, or be a manager or treasurer for a candidate or political party. They also may not serve at the same polling place as a spouse, child, spouse of a child, sister, or brother. Precinct Officials are assigned to a specific position based on their strengths, interests, and experience. Most new Precinct Officials will begin as Assistants.
 
Valid driver’s license in the state of North Carolina.

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting and speaking or hearing and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
