About the role

The Surgical Technician, in addition to assisting in the preparation, processing, care, and maintenance of instruments, supplies, and equipment, functions as a member of the surgical team during operative procedures, also functions in a specialty service, and utilizes and troubleshoots service implementation and equipment.

The individual must know aseptic technique and be able to scrub independently in orthopedic procedures, anticipating the needs of the surgeon, and have knowledge in the sequencing of the surgical procedures.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The Surgical Technician participates, under supervision, in the implementation of Operating Room Nursing Care and performs tasks related to both direct and indirect care of patients in the O.R. The Senior Surgical Technician is accountable to the clinical and administrative nursing staff of the O.R.

It is essential that the Surgical Technician is a team player collaborating with the nursing staff, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and all of the peri-operative staff. The Surgical Technician must work to facilitate the care of the patient in a safe and expeditious manner.

The Surgical Technician will demonstrate competence in performing the duties and responsibilities required by his/her job description.

Orthopaedic scrub experience is required.  Exemplary customer service is required.

Assists with positioning patient properly for surgery.

  1. Maintains correct anatomical position.
  2. Demonstrates awareness of appropriate position for maximum surgical exposure in supine, prone, lateral, lithotomy or other positions.
  3. Procures and utilizes appropriate supports, padding and restraints.

Demonstrates knowledge of responsibilities regarding anesthesia administration.

  1. Identifies hazards and preventive actions to minimize risks in the administration of anesthesia.

Complies with safety and emergency procedures consistent with departmental policies and procedures.

  1. Demonstrates in daily practice and understanding and awareness of maintaining a sterile field that is consistent with safe practices in an oxygen enriched environment.
