Job Overview

The Assistant Vice President and Chief of Staff in the Office of Advancement at Georgetown University oversees on an office-wide basis organizational operations, budget planning and management, workforce development, personnel management, and human capital strategy for the Office of Advancement (OA) and the Office of the Vice President (VP) for Advancement. They make high-level decisions, develop strategy, anticipate problems, remove barriers, and help lead the Office of Advancement to success in achieving both department and University-wide goals.

This role partners with University Finance, University Human Resources, the Office of General Counsel, Office of the COO, and Compliance to ensure that OA practices and policies are aligned with those of the University. In addition, they are responsible for overseeing the execution of the OA staffing plan and ensuring that the office is organized and optimized both to support the successful conclusion of  the current $3B campaign and to begin the planning for the next campaign which will presumably have a goal of $4 billion or more. Both of these major undertakings are under the larger supervision of the Vice President for Advancement and as directed by the President and the Board of Directors.

Of paramount importance, the AVP and Chief of Staff is responsible for the OA budget – one of the largest budgets in the University –  and for meeting financial audit requirements. With 6-8 direct reports, this position oversees the work of 17 full-time staff across the areas of the Vice President’s Office, OA Finance, Production, and Talent Management.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Revenue Management and oversight of gift administration and gift accounting
  • Oversight of Donor Agreements and the Office of Institutional Partnerships
  • Financial Management
  • Officer Leadership & Strategy
  • Team Leadership and Staff Management

Work Interactions

The AVP and Chief of Staff will partner with University and advancement leadership including the Vice President for Advancement, the Chief Revenue Officer, the President’s Office, the University’s Chief Financial Officer, the University’s Chief Operating Officer, Executive Vice Presidents, General Counsel’s Office, Finance, and the Board of Directors. They will work with the OA Executive Team and University Finance to set and manage the University’s Advancement budget and meet the staffing needs to ensure a successful campaign. Serving as a partner and senior adviser to the VP for Advancement, this position will collaborate with the VP and the AVP for Revenue Management (a working title only) to communicate the status and success of the Board of Directors’ financial investment in the Office of Advancement and provide thought partnership in decisions related to campaign priorities.

This position reports to the Vice President for Advancement and serves on OA’s Executive leadership team. Positions that report directly to the CRO are: Chief Data Officer and Assistant VP for Advancement Operations, Assistant Vice President, Donor Agreement and the Senior Director of Development, Institutional Partnerships. The CRO oversees the work of 38 full time staff across the areas of DATA, Donor Agreements, and the Office of Institutional Partnerships.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive work experience in higher education
  • Track record of successfully managing business operations in a complex organization
  • Ability to coordinate the work of fundraising with the university’s academic operation and financial priorities
  • Skilled manager able to build and guide complex and functionally diverse teams
  • Expertise in communications, change management, and advancement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred.
