BASIC FUNCTION:     

PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program Purpose: To build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2)residencies and professional certifications.

Howard University College of Pharmacy  and Bellevue pharmacy are united in their commitment to train future champions in the community pharmacy arena. This postgraduate year one learning experience is based in our Nation’s Capital that serves a diverse patient population. Participation in this residency program will encourage the resident’s creativity and enhance practice skills as they find ways to address unique healthcare challenges in the community pharmacy setting. The residency program ia affiliated with Howard University Hospital Outpatient Mental Health Center. This pharmacy location offers clinical pharmacy services for patients who are prescribed complex therapies such as HIV/ AIDS, mental health disorders, and opioid use disorder. The community pharmacists at this site work closely with medical staff to provide optimal drug therapy for patients. This residency program provides a postgraduate training to prepare pharmacists for management and pharmacy ownership This program seeks to develop a pharmacist that will be able to partner with any hospital system to provide essential transitional care services. This program will also produce a well-rounded professional who will have business acumen, heightened awareness of regulatory issues affecting the practice and experience in providing practical pharmacy education for students.

  • Bedside medication delivery and counseling
  • Disease state management programs in HIV/ AIDS, mental health disorders and opioid use disorder
  • Transition of Care Community Pharmacy Clinic
  • Serving as a preceptor for IPPE and APPE students
  • Advocacy for local pharmacy policy
  • Design and conduct a practice-based research project
  • Presentations at regional and national professional meetings
  • Executing marketing strategy for the promotion of patient care services
  • Solicitation of grant and contract funding
  • Mentor student organizations to facilitate outreach events
  • Teaching Certificate Program
  • Facilitation of lab lectures and simulation
  • Didactic lectures for students
  • Design and implementation of Clinical Services

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:   

Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a college or school of pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. Completion of 400 practice experience hours prior to the start of the residency program or signed preceptor form District of Columbia pharmacist license within 90 days of the start of the residency program.
