<p>Job description<br/>
The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University is looking for an experienced medior / senior data scientist to join the data science team. As a medior / senior data scientist, you will play a leading role in the development and maintenance of our advanced in-house data infrastructure in which we bring together large amounts of data from many different sources. Our data infrastructure, built on years of experience, provides the foundation for many of the basic and applied research projects carried out at CWTS. You will also collaborate with international partners to set up innovative cloud-based infrastructures and to work on research projects involving major data-intensive challenges.<br/>
</p>
<p>Your profile</p>
<ul>
<li>Master or PhD degree, preferably in computer science, data science, or a related discipline, and several years of experience in working with large databases and datasets, ideally in a research-related context.</li>
<li>Strong analytical mindset and significant experience in tackling complex data science problems.</li>
<li>Essential (‘must have’) technical skills:</li>
</ul>
<ol>
<li>Excellent knowledge of and experience with managing, designing, implementing, and querying relational databases in SQL (preferably Microsoft SQL Server).</li>
<li>Expertise in setting up and maintaining ETL and data integration pipelines.</li>
<li>Deep knowledge of and experience with JSON, XML, and REST technologies.</li>
<li>Familiarity with cloud-based platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud).</li>
</ol>
<ul>
<li>Non-essential (‘nice to have’) technical skills:</li>
</ul>
<ol>
<li>Knowledge of cloud data warehouses like Google BigQuery or Azure Synapse Analytics.</li>
<li>Familiarity with linked data, ontologies, knowledge graphs, and SPARQL.</li>
<li>Experience with shell scripting (CMD, PowerShell, Bash).</li>
<li>Experience with Python for data analysis.</li>
</ol>

<li>Good communication skills in English.</li>
<li>Team player with a passion for sharing knowledge and contributing to the team's technical skills.</li>
<li>Proactive, detail-oriented, and can-do attitude.</li>

<p>What we offer</p>

<li>A salary between € 4,332 and € 6,737 gross per month for full-time employment (based on a 38 hour work week), according to scale 11 or 12, depending on your level of experience, of the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.</li>
<li>The duration of the contract is one year. After one year of demonstrating good performance, you will have the opportunity for a permanent appointment, providing stability and career growth.</li>
<li>We offer the flexibility to work partly from home. </li>
<li>You will enjoy about 7 weeks of vacation per year with a full-time working week, ensuring you have time to relax and recharge.</li>
