This role requires onsite work in NYC; this is not a remote role

Overview The New York Public Library has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for over 125 years. Founded in 1895, NYPL is the nation's largest neighborhood public library system and the most used research library in the world. NYPL provides an extraordinary richness of resources, educational innovation, and opportunities available to all across its 92 locations throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.
Reporting to the Chief Digital Officer (CDO), the Chief of Staff is responsible for developing and managing the overarching product development operations function to enable the delivery of exceptional products, platforms and experiences for our patrons. They will also serve as the strategic and operational advisor to the CDO and be the primary contact for connection to other departments outside of Digital. This role critically enables the CDO and the entire Digital Organization to operate at its best and enable exceptional products being produced in a well mannered and measured way.

We are looking for someone we can count on to: Own:
  • The coordination and ways of working of the entire Digital Team to provide a patron-centric experience
Teach:
  • Guide our exceptional Digital Product and Engineering Teams to ensure it is an efficient, effective and fun working environment leading to an outstanding experience for our internal and external clients/business partners
Learn:
  • The culture  of  NYPL and leverage this knowledge to get things done on behalf of our patrons
Improve:
  • The employee experience of the digital staff and all partner teams who work with us

Some expectations for this role are that within: 1 month, this person will:
  • Conduct research and review existing research on the employee experience on the digital team and begin framing the culture and needs of the organization
  • Take control of departmental meetings, product management and team rituals and communications
  • Develop a network within the organization of key partners and departments
3 months, this person will:
  • Define and begin solving for key cultural needs and opportunities to make the Digital team more effective, efficient and fun
  • Take control of Objective and Key Result management, offering feedback on our process and framing how to launch the second half of our fiscal year
  • Structure the digital risk management approach to be applied across the entire portfolio
6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Take control of talent management and people leadership best practices to support our staff
  • Work with the CDO on organizational structure and staffing to best enable the team to meet our goals
  • Work with other departments and key partners to enable deeper partnership and joint goal setting
  • Install a risk management team to support all new builds and maintenance protocols
Responsibilities: 
  • Manage all digital communications and departmental or leadership team meetings and rituals. Including All Hands, Town Halls, Weekly Leadership Meetings, Leadership Retros, Monthly and Quarterly Business Reviews
  • Oversee the development of departmental objectives and key results in addition to their regular tracking at Monthly and Quarterly Business Reviews and supporting product teams in the development and tracking of their objectives and key results
  • In partnership with Human Resources, manage all staff training and development, Performance & Talent Management within digital and in service to organization-wide initiatives
  • Manage the Project Management Team to execute the process requirements of a highly effective product development team
  • Provide connectivity to other departments and the organization through formal and informal channels
  • Develop and implement staff wide surveys, feedback sessions and cultural processes to ensure the leadership team has the pulse of the staff and is enabled to  create a better operating Digital Organization
  • Lead and engage in special projects to support the integration and connectivity of the Digital team and the entire organization
