Description

 

The Fire Safety Division is a Division of the Department of Fire Services, which is a state agency within the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.  The Division staffs a desk that is an integral part of the division to provide fire safety information to fire departments, other regulators, and the regulated community on a consistent frequency.  The purpose of the desk is to assist the local fire departments, other fire officials and the general public on questions concerning state fire code and public fire and life safety concerns.  This is a part-time contract position, with no benefits.

This position will be assigned to interpret and provide guidance on complex fire code and standards.

 

Duties include:

 

  • Dispatching the appropriate compliance officer to incidents such as: explosive related incidents, firework accidents, lost/stolen explosives and fatal fires.
  • Resolve telephone inquiries from local fire departments; the regulated community; and the general public regarding the Board of Fire Prevention Regulations and the State Fire Marshal regulations.
  • Transfer complaints from the local fire departments and the general public to appropriate Compliance Officers via the Compliance supervisor when appropriate.
  • Assist Compliance Officers in the field with the information on file in the office.
  • Develop and coordinate information to be used by Compliance Officers, local fire departments, and the regulated community.
  • Coordinate reports and information from Compliance Officers to files and logs in the office.
  • Review new above-ground storage tank applications prior to acceptance.
  • Review above-ground storage tank annual applications prior to acceptance.
  • Review Marine Fueling application prior to acceptance.
  • May be assigned to maintain a database, which could include entering above-ground storage tank annual inspections, as needed.
  • Related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Two years’ experience as a DFS employee, a firefighter, a MA Hazardous Materials Technician, a commercial driver or in a fire service leadership position
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License
  • Massachusetts Fire Prevention Officer Level I Credential

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of MA fire code and standards
  • Massachusetts Fire Prevention Officer Level II Credential
  • 5 years’ experience as a Fire Prevention Officer interpreting, applying, and enforcing 527 CMR 1.00 Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Safety Code
