Job Description
The Senior Manager, Product Development will lead and contribute to all aspects of the development and release of a cell product based on 24M’s electrochemical storage technology. This includes but is not limited to materials and component selection and validation; formulation; design optimization to achieve market and/or customer targets; development and release of component and product specifications; product validation; support of process validation and transfer to manufacturing, and ongoing engineering support of released products. The Senior Manager, Product Development will coordinate with a team of battery engineers and will work closely with R&D scientists, process engineers, and manufacturing in planning and developing new products consistent with market, customer and manufacturing requirements, on schedule and within budget.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- 4-5 years’ experience in Li-ion product design
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field
- Deep knowledge of the fundamentals of cell design and performance, product development, large and small volume manufacturing process, and FMEA of Lithium ion-based cells
- Experience developing and documenting component level and cell level specifications
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to combine theory with empirical observation
- Ability to interact effectively with vendors and colleagues
- Self-motivated, persistent, hands-on, and results-oriented
- Strong written and oral communication
- Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
- Established track record of successful electrochemical product design
- Working knowledge of statistics
Desired Experience
- 8+ years’ experience in Li-ion product design
- Phd in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
- Experience with APQP or equivalent product quality systems and SPC
- Past experience working in a startup-type environment
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the group for optimization and validation activities on a mechanical design and selected materials.
- Plan and manage all aspects of the development of a new electrochemical storage product from prototype to release, consistent with performance, safety, reliability, cost, manufacturability, and quality requirements.
- Lead and directly contribute to the development of new designs, including but not limited to new materials evaluations, formulation development, and component selection for new generations of products
- Stay close for entire cell manufacturing and prototype processes and contribute to create operation procedures and manuals.
- Develop component and product specifications for both made and purchased components and assemblies
- Evaluate and develop suppliers and vendors
- Carry out cost down activities and second source development
- Participate in failure modes and effects analyses (DFMEA and PFMEA)
- Support failure analyses on test cells and product

- Flag potential issues from initial design through final packaging to promote the delivery of high quality product to partners and customers
- Interact with other R&D and engineering groups to promote rational decision-making in research and development
- Keep abreast of industry trends (attending conferences, benchmarking competitor’s products, etc.)
Physical and Environmental Standards
- Ability to alternate work on-site or from home as required
- Capable of working in low moisture dry room environment: < 1.0% Relative Humidity (-50°C dew point)
- Capable of wearing clean room attire when working in dry room environment: face mask, hair net, safety glasses, gloves, c
