Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and forward-thinking Principal HVAC Engineer – Advanced Special Projects to lead the design, development, and implementation of complex HVAC solutions in non-standard and mission-critical environments. This role focuses on technically advanced, high-impact projects that require deep engineering expertise, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration, which includes driving the integration of emerging HVAC technologies, advanced modeling techniques, and sustainability strategies into unique system designs.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads the engineering and execution of advanced HVAC systems for special projects involving complex or novel applications (e.g., cleanrooms, data centers, labs, R&D facilities).
  • Develops high-performance HVAC solutions using advanced simulation, modeling, and system analysis tools (CFD, energy modeling, airflow studies).
  • Guides the selection and integration of cutting-edge HVAC technologies, including smart controls, low-carbon systems, and energy-efficient design practices.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders including sustainability teams, facilities, R&D, and product development.
  • Provides technical leadership throughout all phases of design and construction, including feasibility, concept development, design review, and commissioning.
  • Contributes to research initiatives, pilot programs, and innovation strategies in HVAC systems design.
  • Mentors junior engineers and foster a culture of continuous technical development and innovation.
  • Ensures compliance with relevant codes, standards, and performance requirements (ASHRAE, IECC, NFPA, etc.).
     

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements:

Master’s or Doctorate (PhD) in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline with a focus on thermal sciences, fluid dynamics, HVAC systems, or energy systems, and 12-15 years of professional HVAC engineering experience. PE license is preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise in HVAC design, system optimization, and performance modeling.
  • Proficiency in HVAC design and simulation tools (e.g., EnergyPlus, IES VE, Trane Trace, CFD platforms, Revit, AutoCAD MEP).
  • Strong understanding of industry standards, building codes, and sustainable design principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills.
  • Experience in high-tech, mission-critical, or regulated industries (such as life sciences, aerospace, clean manufacturing, or high-performance buildings) is a strong plus.
  • Professional certifications such as LEED AP, WELL AP, or similar are desirable

Work Environment:

  • Primarily works in office environment.
  • Sit/stand for long periods.
  • Periodic visits to the manufacturing facility with seasonal hot and cold temperatures, dust, and some chemical fume exposure.
  • Travels occasionally based business need.
