Applications are invited for a part-time humanities research assistant III position under the direction of Sarah Kate Bearman, Ph.D. in the Laboratory for Leveraging Evidence and Advancing Practice for Youth Mental Health (LEAP Lab) at UT Austin. Activities will include outreach efforts at 12 CCISD schools for a longitudinal study of pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children and their families called Thriving Together (PIs Esther Calzada and Sarah Kate Bearman). The project is based in the LEAP Lab and will involve working on a team with a research assistant, graduate students, and undergraduate volunteers. Travel and driving within Corpus Christi will be required.

Purpose

In order to fulfill the scope of work for one externally sponsored research grant, this position will be assisting with a quasi-experimental intervention trial examining the impact of the socio-emotional learning program, ParentCorps, in the Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD). A collaboration between UT Austin, New York University School of Medicine and CCISD, our project implements services to strengthen family engagement and support parents and teachers in building safe, nurturing and predictable environments for young children. The sample includes Pre-K and Kindergarten teachers, students, and parents across 12 CCISD elementary schools.”

Responsibilities

  • Recruitment and retention outreach for a study of pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children and their families attending Title-1 elementary schools in South Texas, including assessment administration, tracking and follow up.

  • Engage and build relationships with school leadership, staff, and parents. Weekly visits to elementary schools in Corpus Christi to carry out caregiver outreach.

  • Serve as a representative of the project and UT Austin at school and community events.

  • Maintain records of outreach (provide quantitative and qualitative data from community engagement).

  • Carry out material inventory, organization, and distribution as needed by the team.

  • Assist with backend administrative duties such as data cleaning, programming, payments, and other administrative duties (scheduling, etc.)

  • Attend virtual project meetings as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 2 years volunteer, part-time, or full-time research experience in psychology

  • At least 2 years volunteer, part-time, or full-time experience working directly with children or adolescents.

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in psychology, social work, education or a related field

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work, education or a related field (can be currently enrolled)

  • Strong academic qualifications, previous outreach experience, and an interest in education, psychology, and/or social work

  • Experience with Excel and documentation

Salary Range

$18 - 20 per hour

Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions.

  • Repetitive use of keyboard at a workstation

  • Travel as needed.
