Our Organization and Mission: The Office represents the State of Florida in state and federal civil and criminal courts, from trial courts to the Supreme Court of the United States.
Pay: $83,522.92 Annually
Position Summary: The Office of the Attorney General is creating a candidate pool for an attorney position in the Child Support Enforcement Division-Appellate Section. This position entails a high-volume appellate caseload representing the Department of Revenue in appellate cases statewide. The position will also train and assist with trial level child support cases in all three office locations.
Qualifications:
- Admission to the Florida Bar and two years of professional experience in the practice of law, legal research, teaching law or in administrative or judicial hearings. The required legal experience must be from the practice of law in a state or territory of the United States. Membership in good standing in another state Bar can substitute for the required admission to the Florida Bar provided that, pursuant to Rule 11-1.10 of the Rules Regulating the Florida Bar, the attorney applies for and obtains admission to the Florida Bar within 12 months of appointment to a position in this class.
The Work You Will Do: This position’s duties include but not limited to the following:
The position requires time management, organization skills, and the ability to effectively and efficiently execute all assigned duties and tasks. The duties of this position may include but are not limited to:
Document Review:
- Prepare, review and sign documents that are to be filed with the court, submitted to counsel, and/or the judiciary to ensure legal sufficiency or appropriateness before signing.
- Review and process legal correspondence.
Court:
- Serve as either appellate counsel or back-up appellate counsel in all DOR/CSE appeals in district appellate courts and the Florida Supreme Court. This includes, but is not limited to, research, brief preparation, oral arguments, responses, motions and other functions directly related to appeals (final orders, interlocutory and collateral appeals, and extra-ordinary writs).
- Attend CSE trial dockets when needed and for training.
- Review and pleadings for filing.
- Provide advice and assistance to CSE trial attorneys, including OAG attorneys and other LSPs, with legal analysis, preparation of memoranda of law, and other attending responsibilities.
Case Management:
- Provide updates and information on case status to the Bureau Chief and client, as requested.
- Provide assistance researching specific case related inquiries.
- Participate in meetings, workshops and conferences as required.
- Maintain case files and ensure files have all proper documentation.
- Update activity and status in all necessary databases to meet deadlines and contractual performance standards.
- Timely updates billable hours in time tracking database.
Legal Research:
- Comprehension of Chapters 61, 409, 742, F.S. and related statutes, as well as Florida Civil, Family Appellate rules of procedure are essential. Knowledge of case law relating to child support and paternity issues is preferred. The ability to handle time constraints and complex legal analysis are minimal requirements.
