Job Title:

Muslim Chaplain

Job Summary:

The Muslim Chaplain is critical in supporting the spiritual, cultural, academic, and personal lives of Muslim students, faculty, and staff at USF. This individual will foster a vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive environment that respects the diversity within the Muslim faith. They will serve as a spiritual leader, counselor, and guide for the Muslim community and the campus at large and a representative of University Ministry to diverse and varied campus and community groups.

Specific Responsibilities

Work with students, faculty, and staff to assess the specific needs and preferences of Muslim students, faculty, and staff, then develop and implement programs and initiatives to enhance spiritual and cultural support.

Provide guidance on Muslim customs and practices to campus stakeholders as needed.

Spiritual Leadership

Coordinate Islamic religious services (e.g. Jummah prayers, Ramadan events) and interfaith and multifaith programs on campus.

Foster and nurture a safe, welcoming environment for individuals from all sects and ethnic backgrounds within the Islamic faith.

Provide confidential one-on-one spiritual direction and crisis intervention, referring individuals to on-campus mental health resources and/or community resources when necessary.

Community Building

Develop, organize, and facilitate community-building programs and events that enhance the Muslim community's spiritual, intellectual, and cultural life. Liaise with campus partners, including academic affairs, dining services, student life, and other areas to serve the needs and goals of the Muslim campus community.

Support student-led campus and community initiatives, including serving as an advisor to faith-based clubs and organizations as needed (e.g. Muslim Student Association and MENA).

Collaborate closely with University Ministry staff and Student Life, participating in regular meetings and contributing to the mission of the University.

Maintain regular office hours to meet with students and collaborate with University Ministry staff. Manage administrative tasks, including budgeting for events, maintaining records, and reporting as necessary.

Collaborate with mosques, institutions of learning, and spirituality partners in the SF Bay Area to meet diverse needs.

Interfaith Collaboration

In conjunction with University Ministry staff, collaborate, plan, and implement interfaith prayer services and events that respond to the needs of the USF community.

Engage with leaders from different religious backgrounds to organize events, panels, and discussions that foster a multicultural and multi-faith understanding.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Islamic Studies, Theology, Religious Studies, or a related field

  • 5+ years of experience in chaplaincy, pastoral care, or community religious leadership.

  • Strong understanding and respect for diversity within the Islamic faith and commitment to interfaith dialogue and cooperation

  • Appreciation of and sensitivity to diverse cultures and lifestyles and ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse populations

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills

  • Crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills

  • Advanced degree

  • Familiarity with the university environment and the needs of students, faculty, and staff is preferred

Pay Rate:

Hourly

Salary Range :

$27.98-$35.87 per hour, commensurate with experience.
