About the role
We are toogeza, a Ukrainian recruiting company that is focused on hiring talents and building teams for tech startups worldwide. People make a difference in the big game, we may help to find the right ones.
Our client The Kyiv Independent, Ukraine’s largest English-language publication, is looking for a Social Media Manager to strengthen its social media team.
The Kyiv Independent is Ukraine’s main English-language news outlet. It was founded in November 2021 by a team of reporters and editors who were fired from the Kyiv Post for defending editorial independence, in partnership with a media consultancy company Jnomics. Today it’s a team of around 80 people based mostly in Kyiv. Publishing in English, we serve as Ukraine’s voice in the world and the world’s window into Ukraine.
Their mission: Serve as the bridge between Ukraine and the world, delivering reliable news, context, and on-the-ground reporting.
Responsibilities:
- Manage a significant part of the Kyiv Independent’s day-to-day social media operations.
- Quickly publish and distribute news, articles, videos, and other materials across the Kyiv Independent’s social media platforms.
- Adapt journalistic content for different platforms, audiences, and formats while maintaining accuracy and editorial integrity.
- Work closely with journalists and editors to turn reporting into compelling, informative, and engaging social media content.
- Monitor the news cycle and identify opportunities to present stories effectively across social media.
- Create, adapt, schedule, and publish original content across the Kyiv Independent’s social media channels.
- Track performance, analyze social media data, and adjust content and platform strategies accordingly.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external contributors to ensure content is timely, accurate, and impactful.
- Support and launch creative social media initiatives, promotional campaigns, membership campaigns, and special projects.
- Help strengthen the Kyiv Independent’s international reach and overall social media impact.
Working schedule:
An important feature of this position is its rotating shift schedule.
The social media team works in shifts because news is published throughout the day, including evenings and weekends.
There are three weekday shifts:
- Morning shift: 9:00 a.m. — 5:00 p.m.
- Day shift: 1:00 p.m. — 9:00 p.m.
- Evening shift: 3:00 p.m. — 11:00 p.m.
Shifts rotate weekly. For example, an employee may work the morning shift one week, the day shift the following week, and the evening shift the week after that.
Social Media Managers also periodically work on weekends. The schedule remains five working days and two days off per week, but days off do not always fall on Saturday and Sunday. They may, for example, fall on Friday and Saturday, Saturday and Sunday, or Friday and Sunday. A weekend shift usually runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Requirements:
- Proven professional experience in social media management, digital communications, digital marketing, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience managing major social media platforms, particularly Instagram and Facebook.
- A good understanding of LinkedIn and TikTok, including their audiences, content formats, and platform-specific approaches.
- A broad understanding of how social media content works, how platforms differ, and how their algorithms influence distribution and engagement.
- Excellent written and spoken English, at Upper-Intermediate to Advanced level.
- Strong communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
- High attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to work quickly and make decisions in a fast-moving news environment.
- Ability to adapt journalistic content into engaging platform-specific formats without losing its original meaning or context.
- Familiarity with multimedia content creation.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience working in media, journalism, publishing, communications, or another fast-paced content environment.
- Experience with video editing tools such as CapCut, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or similar software.
- Experience managing breaking-news or real-time social media content.
- Experience working with promotional, membership, or audience-development campaigns.
- Familiarity with Telegram, Threads, X, Reddit, or other additional social media platforms.
Location and working format:
This position may be performed fully remotely or in a hybrid format, depending on the candidate’s preference.
The Kyiv Independent has an active office in Kyiv near Kontraktova Ploshcha metro station. Team members are welcome to work from the office when they choose, but regular office attendance is not required.
Being based in Kyiv is not necessary.
