Description

The Department of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern Medical Center is seeking an Optometrist with expertise in specialty lenses. Duties include working alongside our Ophthalmologists in the evaluation and management of pre and post operation patients. Candidates must have an O.D. Degree from an accredited program and additional training and/or experience in the evaluation of the cornea. A Texas state license is required and at least one year of practical experience is preferred.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Patient Assessment and Diagnosis - Conduct comprehensive eye exams, including visual acuity, refraction, and binocular vision assessments, and medical eye exams for diabetes, high risk medication use, and ocular diseases/infections.
  • Diagnose and manage a wide range of ocular conditions, including those requiring specialty lenses (e.g., corneal ectasias, post-surgical corneas, corneal scarring, aphakia, dry eye).  
  • Specialty Lens Fitting - Expertise in custom designing and evaluation for specialty contact lenses to address complex ocular conditions with corneal gas permeable lenses, scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, soft prosthetic lenses and other soft specialty contact lens designs.
  • Custom design and evaluation of specialty lenses to address complex vision problems. 
  • Collaboration and Consultation - Collaborate with ophthalmologists, opticians, and other eye care professionals to develop comprehensive treatment plans for patients. 
  • Provide consultation and guidance to patients regarding vision correction options and their benefits. 
  • Patient Education - Educate patients on proper lens care, hygiene, and the benefits of specialty lenses. 
  • Address patient questions and concerns regarding their eye health and lens options. 
  • Resident Education - Conducting lectures for residents

Candidates must have an O.D. Degree from an accredited program and additional training and/or experience in the evaluation of the cornea.
