Job Duties

The RN Shift Supervisor provides professional nursing leadership and administrative oversight for assigned shifts to ensure safe, high-quality, and efficient patient care. This position supervises and supports nursing staff, providing guidance, feedback, and performance management to promote professional growth and accountability. The Shift Supervisor manages staffing adjustments, oversees patient admissions after hours, investigates incidents, and ensures documentation and communication are completed in accordance with hospital policies. Clinically, the Shift Supervisor provides direct patient assessment and consultation during acute or changing conditions, collaborates with physicians, and ensures therapeutic and safety standards are maintained throughout the hospital. The role includes participation in quality assurance audits, policy development, and evaluation of patient care services to identify opportunities for improvement. The Shift Supervisor also coordinates and delivers staff training, ensures preparedness for emergencies, and maintains current clinical knowledge to guide and support staff effectively. This position requires sound clinical judgment, strong leadership, effective communication, and the ability to foster teamwork and uphold the mission and values of the organization.
- Considerable knowledge of nursing, supervising and administrative principles and practices.
- Basic budgeting and accounting; and legal requirements affecting nursing services.
- Considerable skills in clinical nursing procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, to evaluate program and staff performance, to develop standards of care and operational procedures to establish priorities.
**Work requires walking, standing, and sitting, and may require reaching, bending, and stooping. Visual and hearing ability required to observe and monitor patient care being given, employee performance, and safety and sanitary conditions. Work hours may vary to meet special needs and/or requirements. Exposure to geropsychiatric patients who may exhibit aggressive and/or combative behavior.

Minimum Qualifications

-Graduation from an accredited school of nursing required.
-Licensed by the Virginia Board of Nursing as RN
-Valid driver's license

Additional Considerations

-ANCC Certification in Geriatric Nursing strongly preferred.
-ANCC Certification in Adult -Psychiatric or Mental Health Nursing preferred.
-Equivalent training or experience which includes considerable geriatric and psychiatric
nursing experience, supervisory experience, and experience working with an
interdisciplinary treatment team may be substituted for degree or certification.
