Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking highly motivated individuals for an exciting summer Internship within the Water, Sewer, and Streets (WSS) Bureau of the Department of Environmental Services (DES) to work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. 

The primary goal of this internship is to provide hands-on experience in the maintenance of public utilities within a government setting, specifically through fieldwork with contractors.  Interns will primarily support the Paving Managers and be involved in tasks related to paving operations.  Responsibilities will include installing "No Parking" signs on roadways in advance of paving work, as well as distributing door hangers to residences and businesses impacted by the planned operations.  

Through this experience interns will gain a solid understanding of the operational aspects of milling and paving while also assisting managers in overseeing on-site activities.  They will also be introduced to utility adjustments such as water, sewer, and stormwater systems that are typically required in coordination with paving projects.  When possible, inters will have the opportunity to rotate with other managers to observe and assist with contractors working on additional maintenance programs such as water main repairs, sanitary and storm sewer, and concrete maintenance.

Under the direct supervision of a mentor, responsibilities include: 

 

  • Participating in oversight of contract work, specifically related to paving;
  • Assisting with contract programs such as sanitary sewer relining, water main cleaning and lining, or concrete maintenance;
  • Assisting in taking on-site measurements to verify quantities during the invoice approval process and supporting data entry efforts using asset management software;
  • Driving a County vehicle to work locations throughout the County to post signs and confirm work completion; and 
  • Assisting with other WSS tasks and functions as needed.

 


 

Minimum: 

 

In order to apply for this position, you must have completed at least two years (60 semester hours) in a Bachelor's degree program prior to the start date of the internship (May 2025).

Degree Requirements: None, applicant must have an interest in exploring/learning about Construction Management and have completed at least two years of a Bachelor's Degree program.

 

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

 

  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts; and
  • Enrolled in degree program in Construction Management or Civil Engineering or related field;

Special Requirements:

 

Driver's License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license or the ability/willingness to utilize alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, then the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.  

 

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted.  It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

 

Additional Information:

 

Work Hours: This is a full-time, temporary, summer internship, Monday - Friday, 6:30am - 3:00pm with some flexibility in schedule upon supervisor approval.  Some overtime may be required.  This is not a remote opportunity.

 

Work is performed in a range of weather conditions including inclement weather such as, but not limited to rain, wind, heat, etc.
