Partner with and support the regions to grow profitable business in the designated business segment. Act as a business segment subject matter expect – from both an underwriting and industry perspective - to support regional personnel and agents in successfully marketing and underwriting new and existing accounts. Proactively manage business segment results by identifying positive and negative trends and recommending strategies to improve performance. Further Selective’s generalist underwriting appetite by demonstrating a willingness and ability to effectively underwrite accounts in the assigned business segment. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

1. Monitor Small Business portfolio performance: Enhance questions/edits and monitor pricing ( DSM thresholds) to achieve targets in profitability, submissions, hit ratios, DSM levels, and straight-through processing levels.
2. Expand premium generation: Promote growth opportunities by expanding appetite and targeting new or existing segments and markets.
3. Foster strong relationships: Develop excellent working relationships to provide exceptional customer service to regional personnel and agents.
4. Collaborate on small business offerings: Engage with the LOB, Small Product, and Initiative Delivery & Execution teams to plan and implement small business initiatives.
5. Strengthen regional growth: Partner with regional leadership to enhance small business growth within current and newly expanded areas.
6. Contribute to sales meetings: Develop content and participate in region-sponsored sales meetings as needed.
7. Provide quarterly performance insights: Regularly analyze and report on key performance metrics, highlighting trends and identifying opportunities for growth and optimization.
8. Deploy incentive plans: Partner with the marketing team and field to implement incentive plans (e.g., PowerUp) designed to influence agency behavior and support regional growth targets.
9. Conduct post-issuance reviews: Perform formal reviews of agency-issued business to support profitability growth by increasing eligible bindable or quickly declined submissions

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Industry knowledge in assigned business segment
  • Ability to interpret data and analyze the small business portfolio
  • Excellent customer service, networking and relationship building skills; Strong sales and negotiation skills;
  • Strong problem-solving ability and critical thinking
  • Excellent presentation skills;
  • Ability to indirectly influence others to support business objectives.
  • 3+ years Underwriting/Claims/Loss Control or other insurance-related experience.
  • The following experience is preferred: 1-2 years Risk Management:
    • 1-2 years territory management
    • 1-2 years agency experience
    • 1 -2 years exposure to business segment

The expected starting salary range for this role is $82,000 - $130,000.  The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional consi
