DEPARTMENT: ACCOUNTING
POSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR OF ACCOUNTING/CONTROLLER
RESPONSIBLE TO: CFO
EXPOSURE LEVEL: III
EXEMPTION STATUS: EXEMPT

SUMMARY:
The Director of Accounting is a strategic and operational leader responsible for overseeing St. John’s United accounting functions. This role ensures financial accuracy, regulatory compliance, and actionable insights to support data-driven decision-making. As a key member of St. John’s United leadership, the Director collaborates with executive leadership and guides the Business Office team in delivering timely and precise financial reporting for a dynamic non-profit corporation with multiple subsidiaries and a foundation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION: Key Responsibilities
· Review and approve vendor invoices for payment
· Oversee billing operations, cash receipts, and revenue reconciliation
· Reconcile intercompany accounts
· Review and approve bi-weekly payroll and quarterly reporting submissions
· Reconcile investment accounts
· Maintain fixed asset depreciation schedules
· Prepare and post monthly journal entries to the general ledger
· Generate and distribute monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP
· Perform variance analysis communicate key drivers to senior leadership
· Coordinate with grant managers to ensure compliance with funding agency requirements and timely submission of expenditure reports
· Collaborate with the CFO, CEO, and leadership team to develop and monitor the annual budget
· Develop financial reports, models, and projections for internal and external stakeholders
· Coordinate with external auditors during the annual audit, providing work papers and documentation
· Provide work papers and oversee preparation of the IRS Form 990 tax returns with the external accounting firm
· Prepare work papers for Medicare and Medicaid cost reports
· Assist with the design and implementation of accounting practices and internal controls that satisfy audit requirements
· Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of six veteran business office professionals
· Provide financial education and support to department managers on budgeting and financial statement interpretation
· Attend board meetings as needed, and work with the CEO, CFO, and Foundation Director on financial presentations and discussions
· Participate in Leadership Development Group and special committees on occasion
· Support the CFO with additional accounting functions as needed
· Assist and support the Payroll Coordinator

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION: Safety & Employee Responsibilities

· Obey safety rules of St. John’s United
· If you see a safety hazard, correct it immediately (if you can do it without risk of personal injury) or notify your supervisor immediately
· Follow policies and procedures for TB testing, annual influenza vaccinations, and other organization health care protocols
· Stay current on mandatory online training
REQUIREMENTS:
· Confident and experienced in accounting, with deep knowledge of GAAP principles, business operations, and financial technologies.
· Minimum of five years in accounting, ideally within the healthcare sector or nonprofit environment.
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited institution.
· Certified Public Accountant, or actively pursuing licensure with near completion or eligibility.
· Familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance reimbursements.
