The following job duties and requirements are in addition to the Deputy Sheriff – Law Ops job description duties and requirements.

When assigned to School Resource Officer (SRO) Unit:


This is a non-rotational position as long as the employee is within good standing with the agency, SRO Unit and all public and charter schools. This is also dependent on the needs of the agency.

The SRO’s primary duty is to ensure the safety and security of the students, faculty, and visitors at all schools located in unincorporated areas of the county.

Maintains a law enforcement presence at specified schools to act as a deterrent to criminal activity and threats to the safety to include assistance to the school when a student becomes violent and poses an imminent safety concern to staff, students and the public and will only deal with issues of which would be criminal in nature.

Investigates reports of crimes committed on the school grounds during school hours.

Serves as liaison officer between the Sheriff's Office and the schools, community partners within unincorporated Mesa County jurisdiction and assignment.

Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.

Willing to work with juveniles and parents on a daily basis providing counseling, guidance, and establishing a good rapport with students, parents and families.

Able to work in a team environment with fellow SRO’s and School Administrators, D51 security, and charter schools security heads to identify and respond to problem students and/or criminal activities.

Coordinates school activities and Intel with other law enforcement agencies, D51 security and charter schools security heads.

Must be capable and competent at both tactics and management of critical incidents occurring on school grounds.

Performs other related duties as assigned per the needs of the agency.


Lateral Transfer POST Certified Deputy - A Colorado POST certified applicant or an individual who is currently POST certified in the state they reside with a minimum of one year of Patrol Operations experience.


Colorado POST Certified Deputy - Unless the applicant meets the requirements of a POST Certified lateral position as listed above, all Colorado POST-certified deputies will begin their career in the Mesa County Detention Facility.

Any individuals who do not meet the Lateral requirements or are not POST Certified, can apply for the Deputy Sheriff – Jail Ops position.


JOB SUMMARY:

Provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations.

Operates a patrol vehicle patrolling county roads, areas, and businesses to deter criminal activity and promote public safety.


Responds to dispatched calls or complaints to investigate reported incidents of criminal activity, accidents, and emergency calls.

Arrests and/or detains suspected violators of the law. Review facts of incidents to determine if a criminal act or statute violations were involved. 

Prepares a variety of reports, records, affidavits, and logs as required to maintain department incidents and activities. 


Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries.

Transports individuals in custody.

Presents evidence and testimony in judicial settings.
