The Electromagnetics and Network Systems team at RTX Technologies Research Center (RTRC) is looking for a highly motivated and experienced individual for the position of Sr. Principal Engineer specialized in optics and photonics. The candidate is expected to develop, lead and execute programs and strategy focused on transitioning novel concepts from early technology stages to a state that impacts and influences businesses and applications.

What You Will Do:

Responsibilities include developing functional strategies and goals in the area of researcher’s expertise; leading and supporting execution of ongoing programs and preparing external and internal research proposals; building relationships with industry, academia, and government agencies; disseminating research results through reports, conference proceedings, and peer-reviewed articles; and developing intellectual property. This role will require communication skills to convey solutions and results to parties within and outside of own functions and organization.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Strong understanding of science and engineering principles and a record of innovation as evidenced by high quality journal and conference publications, experience in developing and executing government-funded basic research programs, and patent applications.

  • Self-motivation, excellent written/verbal communication and strong problem-solving skills.

  • Hands-on experience with a strong background in optics, photonic integrated circuits, and classical and quantum electromagnetism for applications ranging from RF to optical systems.

  • Knowledge of emerging research areas and techniques, materials and structures for optical and photonic systems.

  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: advanced optics, lasers, heterogeneous integration of photonic integrated circuits quantum optical devices and systems.

  • Broad knowledge of project management and practical to substantial knowledge of RTX projects, programs, or systems with the ability to make enhancements and leverage in daily work.

  • Experience with writing proposals for government funded research, record of grants.

Education: Preferred: PhD in physics, engineering, or relevant discipline with specialization in electromagnetics, optics or quantum systems.

Typically requires: A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience.

Requires expert or mastery level knowledge of work area, typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience.

May have deep knowledge of project management. Advanced knowledge of related disciplines within work area and ability to identify links and potential impact on projects, programs or systems.
