We are seeking a CO Physician Assistant (PA) who functions as a primary provider for the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Health Care & Surgery Center at White Marsh. The PA works collaboratively with faculty and residents to provide care for plastic/reconstructive surgery patients in the operating room and outpatient settings, pre and post operatively. Clinical responsibilities include outpatient clinic and operating room during four (4) ten (10) hour weekday shifts, no weekends, nights, or on-call. The PA works with one primary supervising physician.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Treats patients in outpatient clinic with the surgeons, independently and assists in the operating room.
- Provides patient/family education as needed.
- Interacts with other attending physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, residents, nursing staff, support staff, administrators, and family members.
- Requires evidence-based decision-making when assessing and treating patients.
- Incorporates into practice, theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families and interdisciplinary health care team members.
- Analytical ability is necessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plans of action for long and short-term management of acute and chronic health conditions.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills are required to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and assist with problem solving.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in order to provide information to patients and health care personnel.
- Ability to function effectively and adapt to a dynamic and often changing work environment.
- Ability to work cooperatively within own unit/department and with other units and departments.
- Effectively communicates patient care and related professional information with co-workers.
- Ensures that patient information is kept private and confidential. Provides comprehensive, age-appropriate care to patients as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team.
- Assumes responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff and departmental needs.
- Acts as an educational and clinical resource to nursing and resident staff as well as to patients and their families.
Scope of Practice
- Hand surgery and reconstructive plastic surgery which includes trauma, peripheral nerve, and rheumatoid hand surgery and complex soft tissue reconstruction.
Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Respond to patient/family calls.
- Complete documentation of illness and other patient forms such as FMLA.
- Orient students and surgical residents to the clinical sites.
- Serve as sub-investigators for funded clinical trials.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
- As part of training, will obtain credentials to perform the following interventions and procedures: perform initial and follow-up evaluation of patients with hand and other plastic surgery disorders.
- Perform injection to small joints, tendon sheaths, and anatomic spaces such as the carpal tunnel.
- Administer local anesthetics.
- Perform splinting of fractures and other hand conditions; perform closed reduction of simple fractures.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 30 pounds or more.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be certified and licensed Physician Assistant in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
- Current CPR certification required.
- Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
- Completion of the JHBMC credentialing process is required prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialized knowledge/experience in upper extremity surgery is helpful but not required; otherwise, qualified applicants will be taught in the clinical environment.
