The Senior Firefighter is a key fire/fuels management position within the Wildland Fire Management Department. This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of specialized tools or equipment as a crewmember on an engine, helitack module, hand, or prescribed fire crew. The incumbent performs assignments that involve an experienced knowledge of fire suppression and fuels management techniques and practices in order to assist technical, skilled, and supervisory positions within the Fire Management Department.

The Senior Firefighter assist in the direction and operation of a wildland fire engine, ensuring the correct positioning, proper use and operation, all while monitoring the safety and welfare of the crew. The work consists of containment line construction, management of engine operations, use of pumps and other portable water apparatus. Hose lays using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustments in the effective use of water and additives. Working in and around aircraft such as helicopters, adhering to safety rules, utilizing intermediate knowledge of fire behavior, and the appropriate use of fire/fuels terminology.

Working Conditions

Work is arduous, hazardous, primarily outdoors in varying terrains and involves emergency fire suppression field work which requires physical performance calling for above average endurance and superior conditioning. The work requires strenuous physical exertion, including carrying heavy objects, running, walking, climbing, jumping, twisting, bending, stooping, hacking through underbrush, lifting more than 50 pounds, and using heavy tools for long periods of time. These duties may include occasional demand for extraordinarily strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Temperature extremes, smoke, and dust are frequently severe. The hazardous nature of the work requires the use of protective gear and clothing. The work is typically performed in isolated locations which are often away from roads and water sources; camping is necessary for extended periods. Fire suppression and Fuels treatments involves risk of serious injury or death.

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree preferred
• Must possess an incident qualification card at the Arduous Fitness Level
• Required Training: Firefighter Type 1 (S-131) and successful completion of Firefighter Type 1 Position Task Book (PTB)
• Required Qualifications: Firefighter Type 1(FFT1)
• Preferred Training: Wildland Fire Chainsaws (S-212), Fire Operations in the Wildland Urban Interface (S-215), Portable Pumps and Water Use (S-211), Firing Operations (S-219), Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290)
• Preferred Qualifications: Basic Faller (FAL3), Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5), Wilderness First Responder
• Complete (WFSTAR) Wildland Fire Safety training Annual Refresher (RT-130) *
• Must meet the Federal Interagency Wildland Firefighter Medical Standards for arduous duty
• Must maintain the prerequisite physical stamina and strength needed to perform rigorous duties and pass the Work Capacity Test at the arduous level annually *
• Must be willing to travel and work past 40 hours a week and/or on holidays if needed
• Working knowledge of standard fire/fuels program requirements, tactics, methods, procedures, safety rules, regulations and skills in the use of hand tools, radios, pumps, hoes, and chainsaws sufficient to perform routinely assigned fire suppression and prescribed fire assignments
• Working knowledge of fire behavior, hazards, and accepted fire/fuels safety and procedures to prevent injury and loss of life
• Basic knowledge of engine operation and pumping mechanisms, fire/fu
