Brief Job Description (essential duties of the job):

The Boston Transportation Department (BTD) is seeking a highly motivated Transporation Program Planner III to work on projects that will realize the City's vision to create streets and public spaces that are vibrant, multi-modal, resilient, and technologically advanced. The selected candidate will be committed to public service and improving the quality of life of Boston's residents, concerned for transportation's interface with urban design and the public realm, and envisioning cutting-edge initiatives.

Responsibilities

The Transportation Program Planner III position requires an understanding of the pressing need for action and the patience and persistence required to catalyze change in an environment where needs, resources, and opportunities vary enormously. The Planner reports to and works directly with the Director of Policy and Planning at BTD. Responsibilities include a combination of the following:

  • Manages citywide, district, and corridor visioning and action plans from concept to implementation.
  • Participates as a core member of the City of Boston's Complete Streets initiative to design and implement corridor and public space reconstruction projects.
  • Develops policies and projects working with data analytics, real-time information, smartphone apps, and online tools.
  • Supports ongoing work related to the City's Vision Zero and Boston Bikes initiatives.
  • Participates as a core member of the team developing shared transportation concepts and collaborates with private service providers.
  • Proposes, designs, and advocates for public transportation projects for the city.
  • Reviews large-scale development projects for transportation impacts, working directly with developers.
  • Develops innovative parking policies to reduce congestion and promote the use of other modes.
  • Collaborates with local universities, non-profits, professional groups, and transportation departments in other cities.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of transportation planning experience, of which at least two (2) years must have been in a project management capacity. A bachelor's degree in City Planning or a related field is preferred and can be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. A master's degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience. There is no substitution for the project management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in GIS mapping, Adobe Create Suite or similar graphics programs, and website development. 
  • Strong preference will be given to candidates with a Master's Degree, GIS mapping skills, and demonstrated ability to take projects from concept to implementation.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse range of public agencies, private consultants, and community groups.
  • Proven research, writing, oral, and graphic presentation skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple ongoing projects.
