Assistant Professor of Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, Department of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science

The Department of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science (BGE) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Sedimentology and Stratigraphy beginning August 2025. We seek candidates with research and teaching focused in sedimentology and/or stratigraphy with preference given to those who use new technologies to address problems in the field. A successful applicant will also contribute to our BS Geology, BS Environmental Science, and MS Environmental Science degrees. 

Qualifications

Requirements for the position include:

• a Ph.D. in Geology or closely related field [Individuals who are all but dissertation (ABD) will be considered, however, the degree must be awarded prior to start date],
•  the ability to teach introductory geology courses, an undergraduate upper-level sedimentology and stratigraphy course, and courses in areas of specialization,
• the ability to establish a successful, extramurally funded research program in sedimentology and/or stratigraphy involving students at all levels,  
• the ability to incorporate GIS in teaching and research,
• the ability to work collegially with students, fellow faculty, and staff,
•  the ability to utilize high impact practices in teaching and student engagement per UTC’s Strategic Plan.

The successful candidate’s application will also provide evidence of the following preferred qualifications:

• the ability to teach paleontology and/or courses related to climate change,
• provide university, community, and professional service,
• willingness to assist the UTC campus in its ability to reach additional goals, as specified in UTC’s strategic plan.

BGE has 35 full-time faculty with more than 850 majors distributed between B.S. Biology, B.S. Geology, B.S. Environmental Science, and M.S. Environmental Science degrees.
