Overview

 

The Percussion teacher is responsible for developing and implementing a percussion education program for students in grades 6 through high school. This position requires a deep understanding of percussion instruments, musical theory, and effective teaching methods to foster students' musical growth and appreciation. The Percussion teacher will work collaboratively with other music teachers to enhance the overall music education experience.

 

Qualifications:

 

Educational/Certification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Music Education or a related field

  • Professional Teaching Certification 

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in a variety of percussion instruments, including but not limited to drums, mallet percussion, and auxiliary percussion.

  • Experience teaching percussion at the middle school and high school levels.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with students, parents, and fellow educators.

  • Knowledge of diverse percussion styles and genres, as well as the ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate students with varying skill levels.

  • Familiarity with music technology and its integration into percussion education is a plus.

  • Ability to teach various percussion techniques, including proper grip, stroke, and rhythm.

  • Knowledge of percussion ensemble literature and the ability to arrange and direct percussion ensembles.

  • Familiarity with marching percussion techniques for those involved in marching band activities.

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Instruction:

  • Provide individual and group percussion lessons.

  • Teach proper technique, posture, and musicianship.

  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.

     

Ensemble Direction:

  • Direct and oversee percussion ensembles, including concert percussion and marching percussion units.

  • Collaborate with other music instructors to integrate percussion into larger ensemble performances.

     

Assessment and Feedback:

  • Evaluate students' progress and provide constructive feedback.

  • Conduct regular assessments, auditions, and recitals.

     

Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with other music educators to coordinate performances, festivals, and events.

  • Communicate effectively with parents and participate in parent-teacher conferences.

     

Professional Development:

  • Stay current with trends and best practices in percussion education.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills.

     

Administrative Tasks:

  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and attendance.

  • Assist in the organization and execution of percussion-related events.

  • Collaborate with multiple campus administrators to ensure campus and district procedures and tasks are being met.

 

Student Management:

  • Act as campus behavioral coordinator in accordance with state laws and regulations.
  • Work with faculty and students to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate.
  • Ensure that school rules are applied uniformly and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable, in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and the student handbook.
  • Conduct conferences with parents, students, and teachers on student and school issues.
