Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing or designee, the Medical Emergency Team (MET) Nurse plays a proactive role in identifying and managing patients at risk for clinical deterioration outside of the ICU and Emergency Department. The MET Nurse collaborates with bedside RNs to identify acute changes, coordinates timely provider intervention and stabilizes patients before a rapid response or code blue is necessary. This role also includes responding to all rapid response and code blue events, leading debriefing sessions and reviewing code events as part of the Critical Response and Resuscitation Committee (CRRC). In addition to emergency response, the MET Nurse acts as a resource to bedside staff, supporting clinical decision-making and implementing process improvements and training based on case reviews and quality data.
A caregiver in this role works nights from 7:00 p.m. -- 7:00 a.m.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Identify patients that require critical assessment and intervention.
Implement action plans identified through analysis of data and case reviews.
Serve as a CRRC member, enter cases into the quality data review tool, complete nursing reviews of events prior to emergencies or codes and present findings at CRRC meetings.
Remain current with evidence-based practice and recommend adoption or standards in collaboration with the team.
Ensure Compliance with Regulatory Agencies.
Provide education and training for nursing staff related to code response roles (i.e. documentation on emergency response form code sheet, operation of the Zoll defibrillator and monitor, nursing role in a code or emergency).
Collaborate with nursing professional development to provide mock codes and simulation for nursing staff.
Serve as a resource/support to nursing staff, providers, patients, families and other departments.
Review patient lists and tools in the electronic medical record to prioritize assessment and intervention for high-risk patients.
Round on all inpatient units to discuss patients being followed by MET or those with newly identified clinical issues that could lead to further deterioration.
Provide education and support in real time in assessment, intervention, planning and evaluation for primary nurse delivering patient care.
Address acute issues as they arise and activate full MET/Rapid Response Team when needed.
Work with primary nurses and teams to address issues alongside the primary nurse.
Notify the MET/Rapid Response team for further evaluation and intervention.
Respond to rapid response and code blue calls.
Provide critical care nursing until patient is stable or transferred to higher level of care.
Complete clinical integration of BLS/ACLS Physician Training.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Current licensed as a (RN) registered nurse in the state of Florida
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
