About the role

We’re seeking a Staff API Software Engineer to lead the charge on Healthie’s GraphQL API—the backbone of our rapidly expanding developer ecosystem. This isn’t a role where you simply consume APIs; it’s about building APIs as products in their own right: elegant, scalable, and a joy to use.

Healthie’s API processes over 1 billion calls every month, powering custom experiences, analytics, and integrations that touch millions of patients’ lives. As Staff Engineer, you’ll set the bar for what “world-class” means in healthcare APIs—designing systems that scale effortlessly, obsessing over every millisecond, and crafting developer experiences so smooth they feel invisible.

• This is a full-time, remote position located in the United States
• The base salary for this role is $197,000-$227,000 per year plus equity & company bonus, benefits
• U.S. work authorization is required and Healthie does not provide sponsorship.

What You'll Do

• Design and scale GraphQL APIs that serve billions of requests—built for speed, reliability, and clarity.
• Define and champion API architecture and standards that developers love to build on.
• Build and refine SDKs and developer tools that let engineers ship features in hours, not weeks.
• Partner with product and engineering leadership to shape the API roadmap, turning developer feedback into platform breakthroughs.
• Elevate the developer experience—from schema design to error messages—so working with Healthie feels effortless.
• Mentor engineers, influence architecture, and drive cross-team technical strategy.
• Improve observability and tooling to keep our API ecosystem rock-solid as it scales.

About You

• 8+ years of backend or full-stack development experience, plus deep GraphQL expertise. Bonus points for Ruby on Rails.
• A proven track record designing and scaling APIs that handle millions or billions of calls.
• Skilled in building developer tools and SDKs (TypeScript, Python, Ruby, or similar) that make integrations effortless.
• You care about the details: authentication, pagination, error ergonomics, observability, versioning—you’ve solved these at scale.
• A leader who mentors others, sets technical direction, and raises the bar across engineering.
• You’re obsessed with creating APIs that feel as intuitive as they are powerful.
• Strong communication skills
