Job Description
We are seeking a Staff Scientist to join our Charlotte, NC team! Come join us! In this role, you'll be in the field and behind the data on environmental due diligence projects that help clients understand and protect the land they build on. You'll conduct Phase I and support Phase II Environmental Site Assessments across the Charlotte area, while also contributing to Atlas National Programs work throughout the NC/SC region. It's hands-on, meaningful work — the kind that keeps communities safe and helps development happen responsibly. You'll partner closely with project managers and a supportive team who will help you grow your technical skills and build a career you're proud of.
Core Responsibilities
- Conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments.
- Support Phase II ESAs — collecting soil, groundwater, methane, and soil-vapor samples; logging soil borings; and installing monitoring wells — along with limited asbestos sampling.
- Perform and document field investigations, including site reconnaissance, sampling, and interviews, relaying findings to the project manager in real time so scope can be adjusted quickly.
- Manage and interpret sampling data, building clear summary tables, result interpretations, and sample location maps.
- Prepare well-organized technical reports using online reporting platforms (experience with Quire a plus).
- Help clients meet environmental, health, and safety needs — including regulatory compliance and permitting — while following safe work practices at all times.
You’ll thrive here if you have
- A BS in Geology, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- 2–5 years of experience performing site assessments and preparing Phase I ESA reports (prior environmental consulting experience is a plus).
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER training — or the readiness to complete it.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to relay field findings clearly and promptly.
- Comfort with physically active fieldwork — full days outdoors, traversing wooded or forested terrain, in a range of weather conditions.
- Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
- A willingness to travel within the NC/SC region up to 30%, and a home base in the Charlotte area.
