Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a semi-independent position. The incumbent works on enteric organisms to identify and characterize them by both traditional and molecular methods and performs other General Microbiology testing including identification of referred cultures from sentinel clinical laboratories.
The incumbent performs sero-grouping and sero-typing of Salmonella as well as identification and characterization of other enteric organisms received at the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories in Jacksonville. The traditional sero-grouping and -typing is performed in accordance with the CDC PulseNet program and the incumbent must ensure that testing is performed in a timely manner and isolates referred to the Molecular Section for Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).
The incumbent will also perform molecular testing, as needed, for example, molecular serotyping tests, PCR and preparation of DNA for WGS. This work will support both the General Microbiology and Molecular Microbiology Sections for PulseNet and other CDC programs.
The incumbent will ensure all quality assurance and safety requirements are met. The incumbent will participate in weekend and holiday coverage.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing.
Knowledge of procedures, techniques & equipment used in lab testing and analysis.
Skill in the use of lab equipment. Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Qualifications:
Minimum - Eligible to apply and acquire a public health license or clinical laboratory license.
Preferred - Bachelor degree. Posses a public health license or clinical laboratory license.
