District Patrol Officer

The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) provides quality water supply, water pollution control, mapping, and household hazardous waste collection to eight member municipalities: Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor. Additionally, the MDC provides drinking water to portions of Farmington, Glastonbury, East Granby and South Windsor, known as the MDC's non-member towns.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This is responsible District patrolling work involving the patrol of District property to assure conformance of the public to District regulations and public laws.

Work involves responsibility for safe patrolling to identify and resolve or report violations by the public. Duties include patrolling District property; investigating incidents and controlling people and traffic. This position also has the responsibility for making standard patrolling decisions in accordance with established procedures. This work requires that the employee have good knowledge, skill and ability in patrol methods.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general supervision of the District Patrol Sergeant.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Patrols District lands, waters and facilities.

Investigates accidents, offenses and incidents, and takes action to resolve situations encountered in accordance with established procedures.

Responds to emergency calls and administers first aid.

Directs traffic and controls crowds.

Prepares detailed reports of all incidents encountered and fills out related forms.

Performs work in a safe manner and observes all safety procedures.

Uses all tools, equipment and materials responsibly and performs basic inspection and preventive maintenance prior to use.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Good knowledge of the tools, equipment, and methods of patrol operations.

Good knowledge of the work standards and safety procedures in patrol operations.

Good skill in the operation of firearms and related law enforcement equipment.

Considerable ability to perform patrol work safely, effectively and efficiently.

Considerable ability to follow oral and written instructions and to learn District procedures. Good ability to communicate orally.

Good ability to fill out forms and charts.

Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other governmental agencies and the general public.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A high school diploma or the equivalent plus five years of experience in patrol or related work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be a State of Connecticut Police Academy graduate.

Must have a valid driver's license.
