Assistant Clinical Professor, Veterinary Anatomic Pathology
University of ConnecticutAbout the role
INTRODUCTION
The Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science (PVS) in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR) at the University of Connecticut (UConn) invites applications for an 11-month, non-tenure track Assistant Clinical Professor position in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology.
The successful candidate will contribute to the activities at the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (CVMDL) within PVS. CVMDL is an animal health diagnostic laboratory that provides advanced pathology services to UConn researchers, external investigators, veterinarians, state and federal agencies, and the public. CVMDL has a significant local and national presence in disease diagnosis. It is the only laboratory in the New England region accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). It is also a member of the USDA-APHIS National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN), the Food and Drug Administration's Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN) and is an authorized laboratory for the National Poultry Improvement Program (NPIP).
The veterinary anatomic pathologist will also contribute to undergraduate education in PVS by teaching existing and new courses in our revised curriculum. Additionally, the veterinary pathologist will support graduate education for veterinarians by participating in the PVS 3-year MS Anatomic Pathology Residency Program and the upcoming combined residency program in Anatomic Pathology and Laboratory Animal Pathology, developed in collaboration with another institution in the region.
The veterinary anatomic pathologist will be responsible for performing postmortem examinations (both gross and microscopic), interpreting pathology, and preparing diagnostic reports. The pathologist will also contribute to the development and application of techniques such as immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, and digital pathology (including image analysis) to enhance diagnostic interpretations. This position will support the PVS-CVMDL research mission through research-directed postmortem examinations, assistance with study design, identification of new disease entities, and further characterization of established diseases. The veterinary anatomic pathologist will serve as a local and national resource for expertise in pathology and will actively contribute to the dissemination of findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at scientific meetings, and innovative research. Securing grant funding will be essential to support all scholarly activities.
The University of Connecticut maintains state-of-the-art core facilities that deliver support in several areas including microscopy, imaging, flow cytometry and cell sorting, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, animal maintenance and animal experimentation. The Department of Pathobiology and the adjacent research Departments within UConn Colleges and Schools, such as the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Pharmacy, and the College of Engineering, provide a highly interactive scientific community.
PVS is the leading infectious disease and diagnostic unit on the Storrs campus. Our research focuses on microbiology (including bacteriology and virology), pathology, and immunology. We are home to the CVMDL and the Center of Excellence for Vaccine Research (CEVR). The PATH undergraduate major offers a Pre-Health concentration for professional careers (Veterinary, Medical, Dental, and Physician Assistant schools), a Global Health concentration for students with an interest in Public Health and One Health careers, and a Medical Biotechnology concentration for students interested in careers with the biomedical/biotech industry, as well as research hospitals and medical centers.
CAHNR has developed and implemented a Strategic Vision to guide the development and focus of our teaching, research, and Extension programs in the years 2020-2025. Faculty hired for this position will be expected to make significant contributions in their area of expertise, contributing to the advancement of one or more of the CAHNR’s five strategic priorities:
- Ensuring a vibrant agricultural industry and sustainable food supply
- Enhancing health and well-being locally, nationally, and globally
- Promoting justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in our communities
- Fostering sustainable landscapes across urban-rural interfaces
- Advancing resilience and adaptation in a changing climate
