The Division of Pulmonary Medicine’s ICU Research Team is looking for an Associate in Research to join our collaborative, mission‑driven group. In this role, you will support both domestic and international research projects that aim to improve care for critically ill patients and their families. You will work directly on high‑impact studies, including ICUConnect‑2, a multisite randomized clinical trial funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) that evaluates a digital communication system designed to improve communication and palliative care for older adults in the ICU.

Every day, you will contribute to study operations, coordinate multisite activities, manage data workflows, support scientific outputs, and help develop digital tools that strengthen research infrastructure. You will also apply your global health experience to support implementation research in Kenya, including qualitative analysis, codebook development, memo writing, and manuscript preparation.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys research operations, data management, global health, and digital innovation and wants to make a meaningful impact on patient‑centered research in critical care.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Global Health, Health Administration, or a related field
  • Must be engaged in scientific research that requires a scientific leadership role, and not employed as a research staff member
  • Experience supporting clinical or global health research studies.
  • Experience with REDCap and digital research tools.
  • Experience working in multisite or international research settings.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Fluency in English and either Spanish or Swahili.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with app development or digital tool integration in research.
  • Experience conducting both quantitative and qualitative data analysis (NVivo, R Programing).
  • Experience supporting IRB submissions, safety reporting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience coordinating site visits or multisite research operations.
  • Experience drafting manuscripts, research reports, or scientific materials.

Other Requirements

  • Proficiency in Swahili (language requirement).
  • May require occasional travel for multisite coordination.
  • Must comply with Duke University policies and training requirements.

Work Arrangement

This position is onsite with potential hybrid flexibility depending on project needs and departmental approval. The employee must reside in a Duke‑approved state.

Essential Job Duties

  • Coordinate study operations for ICUConnect‑2, ensuring protocol adherence, participant documentation, and recruitment/retention strategies.
  • Manage regulatory compliance activities, including IRB submissions, safety reporting, consent processes, and AE documentation.
  • Perform data management tasks, including data entry, validation, quality control, SOP development, and basic statistical or qualitative analysis.
  • Support scientific research efforts through protocol development, literature reviews, manuscript drafting, and preparation of scientific materials.
  • Collaborate with domestic and international sites, including coordinating site visits, training personnel, and managing participant workflows using EMR and research systems.
