About the role

Position Summary:

A Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatrical Design is responsible for teaching 24 credits per academic year. This is a non-tenured track in the Theatre area of the Department of Performing Arts.

Job Description:

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Produce scenic and/or lighting designs for production season
  • Mentor and collaborate with student on their designs
  • Engage authentically with students, the department, and colleagues
  • Takes responsibility for all grading of student work and submitting grades at the end of each semester
  • Hold regular office hours
  • Attend weekly department meetings
  • Service on departmental committees such as season selection, faculty review, curriculum
  • Participate in departmental development and assessment
  • Maintain and ensure the safety of all students, faculty, staff and patrons in the building for all events and daily classes.
  • Manage student crews and supervise student designers in lighting, sound, scenery and properties.
  • Attend production meetings.
  • Create production schedule for entire season including all renters using the theatre spaces.
  • Manage Budget for Sets, Props, Sound, Lights, Costumes for all productions
  • Identify, plan, and manage maintenance budget for all production equipment
  • Point person with campus for any repairs, issues related to performance spaces (2) Scene Shop, Light Shop & Booth.
  • Manage moving of seating/risers, sets, props, lighting etc. in/out of building.
  • Manage on campus storage of sets, props, building materials.
  • Recruit specific designers or mentorships for student designs for all season productions.
  • Implement safety procedures as changes are made or safety needs are identified.
  • Attend all technical rehearsals
  • Create training procedures on all equipment and tools.
  • Advise season (with respect to size of department, tech support, and production schedule needs).
  • Coordinate with other departments when necessary.
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.
  • Produce and remediate digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:

  • An MA or non-terminal degree in Theatre with a specialization in Technical Theatre and/or significant professional experience as a technical director, production manager, theatrical designer.
  • Ability to manage students in the scene shop.
  • Ability to design (particularly set a/o lighting) and construct scenery for 2-4 shows per year.
  • Ability to collaborate as a team player with theatre faculty, staff, guest artists, students, and campus community
  • Ability to provide technical direction for all shows, including leading student-focused design and crew teams, and budget management.
  • Ability to teach Stage Technology courses, as well as upper-division design courses in scene design, stage lighting, sound design and stage management.
  • Ability to teach general theatre courses, such as Intro to Theatre.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor students in technical theatre.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities

 

 

Preferred Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:

  • A completed terminal degree, MFA or PHD, by August 15, 2025, in a Theatrical Design Discipline.
