Alexandria’s Life Science Team serves a highly strategic role at the intersection of Alexandria’s real estate, venture investment, thought leadership, and regional business development activities to grow and support the local life science clusters in which we operate.
As a member of Alexandria’s San Francisco Life Science Team, activities will include driving regional business development, managing tenant sourcing and underwriting, leading venture investments through Alexandria’s strategic venture platform, and collaborating on regional business strategy. Business development includes tenant engagement, fostering relationships across the biotech, biopharma, and venture capital communities, and organizing and leading events to elevate the Alexandria brand. Alexandria’s venture investment activities, conducted through the Company’s strategic venture capital platform, Alexandria Venture Investments, allow the Company to discover and invest in innovative biotech and biopharma companies. Responsibilities span due diligence of potential investments, their therapeutic areas and respective competitive landscapes, and the strength of innovation of their technology platforms.
We are seeking a Senior Associate to support our San Francisco Bay Area operations by providing additional leadership, external business development, research capabilities, and expertise in the life science industry; supporting venture investment and tenant underwriting; and supporting other due diligence and business development activities. The role may be asked to support national life science activities and potentially in other Alexandria ecosystems from time to time.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Contribute to Alexandria’s venture capital activity by sourcing potential investments and meeting with their management, supporting related due diligence, and composing investment reports and memos.
- Assist in scientific and financial diligence and underwriting of prospective tenants for Alexandria’s portfolio and monitor various performance indicators relevant to companies in Alexandria’s network.
- Engage in business development and networking activities across the local life science ecosystem in the San Francisco Bay Area and provide periodic support to other regions as needed.
- Nurture strong connections across the life science industry, including with early-stage companies, universities, research institutions, investors, and venture firms.
- Attend one-on-one meetings with prospective and current portfolio companies, ongoing evaluation of their research and development plans and fundraising efforts, review of pitch decks, etc.
- Monitor and summarize relevant news and information coming out of major media sources, key industry conferences, company earnings calls, press releases, and SEC filings.
- Conduct in-depth research relevant to various disease and therapeutic areas, capital markets, U.S. healthcare and regulatory activities, and broader trends in the life science and adjacent industries.
Other Responsibilities:
- Collaborate cross-functionally across Alexandria’s leasing, accounting, finance, and regional leadership teams to support core business goals.
- Gather and interpret data from multiple sources to identify ecosystem trends that may impact Alexandria’s real estate business and other strategic activities.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a life science-related field required. Master’s or PhD a plus.
- Minimum 5 years’ prior work experience (or equivalent educational experience, e.g., PhD work) within the life science industry in a venture investment, investment banking, consulting, and/or business development capacity preferred.
- Solid understanding of the life science and broader healthcare industry, including, but not limited to, chemistry and biology fundamentals, the drug development process, the U.S. healthcare and regulatory landscape, venture and equity financing, and human disease.
- Ability to engage stakeholders across the life science ecosystem and represent Alexandria at local meetings, programs, and events.
- Knowledge of capital markets and finance a plus.
- Strong research and analytical skills, and high attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and effectively manage and organize multiple projects concurrently.
- Excellent written communication skills a must, with ability to create concise and impactful written reports, correspondence, and responses to requests from team members and executive-level members within the Company.
