Job Summary

The Sr Field Electrical Engineer provides technical, logistical, and administrative support to the Electric Traction Assistant Division Engineer Mid-Atlantic Division North for the efficient and cost-effective management of construction, maintenance, and inspection of ET infrastructure.  The individual will work in both the office and in the field in all types of weather condition to support 24/7 operation. The Sr Field Electrical Engineer helps to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of electrical systems across the rail network. The individual will demonstrate extensive experience in electrical engineering, coupled with a strong understanding of rail systems, and a commitment to safety and compliance.

Essential Functions

  • Observe field activities to ensure conformance with safety protocols. Correct activities that do not conform and advise supervision when necessary. Report observations to the upper management and assist in driving improvement in the overall safety culture. Implements safety work plans for the prevention & elimination of personal injuries and hazardous conditions on Amtrak property and the right-of-way.
  • Ensure all regulatory and required inspections, maintenance, and commissioning of assets are performed on-time and at a high level through observations in the field. Correct poor performance in this area and advise supervision when necessary. Ensure adherence to safety protocols, industry regulations, and company standards in all electrical engineering activities, implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Monitor and asses the condition of ET assets to ensure all aspects of the infrastructure meet or exceed all current Amtrak standards and comply with all relevant regulatory requirements. Advise upper management where capital renewal programs should be planned prioritizing locations for “state of good repair” projects and programs.
  • Requests and monitors the status of procurement for all material and services, and ensures the proper delivery, storage, and installation of materials as well as the performance of any contracted services. Ensure adequate stock of material is available for running repairs. Plan installations and coordinates work activities with other crafts and transportation. 
  • Communicates with system office and provides technical support in the field for all inspection, maintenance, and construction activities. Available 24/7 to respond to emergencies and interruptions to the operations. Support planned work on weekends and nights in the field.
  • Lead field activities including the installation, commissioning, diagnosing, and repairing of electrical and/or electronic systems related to ET railroad infrastructure.
  • Serve as technical expert in the field that is responsible for ensuring all electrical prints and/or electronic circuitry diagrams, are up to date and corrected for as built conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • Plus 6 years of relevant work experience.
  • Qualified or possess sufficient experience to be qualified in NORAC, RWP, AMT-2, and Electric Traction qualified 
  • Demonstrated experience in all facets of ET inspection, maintenance, and construction including but not limited to catenary and substations, as well as working knowledge of other crafts involved. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • Plus 8 years of relevant work experience.
  • Master of Science Degree in Engineering, Construction Managem
