About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Sex offender Unit Compliance Officer (SOIU) in Region 2 covering Fairfax. The successful candidate will assist the efforts of law-enforcement agencies and others to protect their communities and families from repeat sex offenders. It also protects children from becoming victims of criminal offenders by helping to prevent such individuals from being allowed to work directly with children. Additionally, this compliance officer position is responsible for properly registering sex offenders, educating sex offenders, verifying sex offenders, and when a violation of law has occurred, referring the matter to a Trooper for investigation.

Minimum Qualifications

•Willingness to learn and demonstrate understanding of the registration requirements of convicted sex offenders in Virginia.
•Knowledge of judicial proceedings, case management, and the parole process.
•Skill in operating a computer to include Microsoft software applications.
•Demonstrated skill to operate a motor vehicle.
•Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing in English; to maintain harmonious working relationship with supervisors and the public; to make decisions independently by applying policies, rules, and regulations; to work independently, follow instructions, and pay close attention to details; and to identify community resources.
•Valid Virginia Operator's License.
•Graduation from high school or equivalent.
•Progressively responsible law enforcement experience or any combination of training and experience indicating possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
•Must be eligible to become Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified, which requires either United States (U.S.) citizenship or having been a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. and eligible for naturalization.

Compliance Officers assigned to the Firearms and Sex Offender Investigative Unit (FSOIU) shall be assigned to a specific region and duty post by special order. Compliance Officer's shall reside within 45 minutes from any border of their assigned county or city, provided the residence is located in a NOVA Pay Area in order to receive the NOVA pay rate of $42,906, if the residence is not in a NOVA Pay Area the pay rate shall be $35,901.
