About the role

DIRECTV is seeking a highly experienced and strategic Sr. Dir, Communications & Community. The ideal candidate:

  • Is a skilled communicator and an extraordinary writer with demonstrable experience in journalism, PR, and new media.
  • Is curious, persistent, and comfortable asking the right questions to get the information required to put together fully developed news stories.
  • Is self-driven and comfortable working independently with little supervision – owning projects from start to finish.
  • Is comfortable turning complicated concepts into easy-to-digest and compelling stories for public and employee consumption.
  • Follows current events to stay up to date on industry news and societal trends.
  • Enjoys creating valuable content pieces that appeal to diverse audiences, attract customers, and boost brand awareness.
  • Is comfortable promoting creative ideas to the team, with the experience and knowledge to usher the ideas to execution.
  • Is comfortable working with partners internally and externally to create content that is informative, engaging, and compelling.
  • Has a deep understanding and experience in supporting industry-change thought leadership, consumer product launches, sponsorship activations, particularly as they relate to a competitive position in the industry.
  • Experience managing cross-functional speaking opportunities and awards and recognition.

A plus if the candidate has:

  • A working knowledge of the pay-TV industry, specifically DIRECTV and its competitors.
  • Experience showcasing product leadership.
  • Served a corporate spokesperson in the past.
  • Strong media contacts in the industry and experience pitching.

Here's what you’ll do:

  • Set and lead communications strategies for large-scale initiatives and/or public communications of significance.
  • Write, edit, proof, fact-check, and publish a variety of consumer-centric communications with a relentless focus on quality.
  • Work closely with internal partners across DIRECTV Consumer, Content, Legal, and Corporate Communications (earned, owned, social, and employee), to take projects from conception to completion.
  • Lead content writing and copywriting/messaging projects, including ideation, writing, and editing of materials; ensuring projects align with corporate messaging and follow legal and brand guidelines.
  • Write in various content types, including press releases, email, social media posts, blogs, and more on a regular basis.
  • Become an expert on all things DIRECTV, and be able to be ambassador on products, offers, and more.
  • Facilitate endorsement request, alignment, and approval process.
  • Able to directly tie outputs to sales and retention outcomes.
  • Relationships and leadership in supporting and leading consumer industry analyst relations to create 3rd party advocacy of DIRECTV’s leadership in the industry.

What you’ll need to be successful:

  • A writer and editor with 10+ years’ experience in digital media supported by a strong portfolio of high-quality work. Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Strong, adaptable written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write effectively in a variety of styles and formats including (but not limited to) press releases, emails, blogs, employee communications, newsletters, videos, and speeches.
  • Ability to create and develop compelling stories about departmental activities for a mass audience.
  • Capable working both independently and in a collaborative, team-focused environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to exercise good editorial judgement and discretion.
  • Deep understanding of branded content and how editorial can work to help achieve revenue goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize performance data to inform and improve content creation and strategy.
  • Strong project management skills including the ability to work independently and manage multiple ongoing projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, advanced working knowledge of Word.
  • May require a background check due to job duties requiring routine access to DIRECTV and DIRECTV customer’s proprietary data. Qualified applicants with arrest and conviction will be considered for employment in accordance with local ordinances and state law.

This position requires, but is not limited to, approximately 10% travel to support team meetings and support of key company announcements.
