Job Summary

The General Superintendent provides strategic leadership and oversight for all field operations on a mission-critical data center construction project. Working closely with the Project Manager and Project Executive, this role drives the overall construction plan, site logistics, sequencing, and execution strategy. The General Superintendent ensures all day-to-day jobsite activities—including personnel management, safety, scheduling, MEP coordination, commissioning readiness, and quality—are executed to the highest standards required for hyperscale data center environments.

Job Duties

  • Applying an expert-level understanding of complex MEP systems, including medium-voltage distribution, UPS systems, generators, BMS/EPMS, cooling systems, and redundancy configurations (N+1, 2N, etc.)
  • Identifying and mitigating risk factors unique to data center construction, such as critical path MEP integration, equipment lead times, and commissioning dependencies
  • Managing the QC program with a focus on MEP installation accuracy, equipment startup, and commissioning turnover packages
  • Overseeing all daily jobsite activities, ensuring alignment with the data center’s phased turnover strategy (white space, electrical rooms, mechanical yards, etc.)
  • Directing site logistics including crane plans, laydown areas, equipment delivery sequencing, and secure access protocols
  • Ensuring strict adherence to as-built documentation, drawing logs, and revision control, communicating updates to all trade partners
  • Conducting constructability reviews with a focus on mission-critical systems integration and commissioning readiness
  • Leading weekly coordination meetings with trade partners, owners, commissioning agents, and design teams
  • Conducting preconstruction meetings for each phase, emphasizing MEP coordination, testing requirements, and commissioning milestones
  • Developing detailed scopes of work for trades, ensuring clarity around startup, testing, and integrated systems testing (IST) expectations
  • Coordinating and scheduling work activities for all field personnel, ensuring alignment with the CPM schedule and short-interval look-ahead plans
  • Evaluating field progress against the project plan and developing recovery strategies when needed
  • Managing phased jobsite utilization plans to support equipment installation, energization, and commissioning
  • Tracking milestone completion for MEP rough-in, equipment set, energization, startup, functional testing, and IST
  • Reviewing and verifying quantity takeoffs and materials management for long-lead and mission-critical equipment
  • Understanding the financial impacts of field decisions and integrating cost-effective solutions, including value engineering when appropriate
  • Managing the project permit process and ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, including NFPA, NEC, and local AHJ requirements
  • Ensuring strict adherence to ethics, compliance, and security protocols required for data center environments
  • Providing mentorship and performance evaluations for direct reports, including Site Superintendents and field staff
  • Representing the company in owner meetings, interviews, and presentations
  • Fostering strong relationships with owners, commissioning teams, architects, subcontractors, and vendors
  • Enforcing a culture of safety aligned with mission-critical construction standards
  • Ensuring compliance with OSHA, company safety policies, and site-specific requirements
  • Participating in safety meetings, inspections, and incident reporting
  • Refusing unsafe work and promoting a proactive approach to hazard identification

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred
  • Minimum 12 years of construction experience, with at least 5 years in mission-critical or data center environments
  • Proven experience managing projects valued at $1MM+, with preference for large-scale, fast-track, or hyperscale data center projects

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of MEP systems, redundancy strategies, and commissioning processes
  • Proficiency in planning and scheduling, including CPM and short-interval planning
  • Ability to interpret and manage technical specifications, engineering drawings, and installation manuals
  • Strong competency across all trade types, with emphasis on electrical, mechanical, and low-voltage systems
